O'Mara on state budget: fiscal discipline, attention to the economy

Albany, N.Y.—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) said today that the 2011-2012 state budget enacted by the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo before the April 1 start of New York’s new fiscal year “represents a good beginning to fiscal discipline, long-term economic strength, and a better business climate.”

Confirmation Meeting

CONFIRMATION PROCESS--Senator O'Mara questions Joe Martens, Governor Andrew Cuomo's nominee to head the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), at a meeting of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee in early March.  The full Senate confirmed Mr. Martens as DEC's new commissioner on March 9th.

Senate budget: less spending, no new taxes, broader commitment to economic growth

Albany, N.Y., March 15— The New York State Senate approved today its version of a proposed 2011-2012 state budget and area Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) said the cornerstones of the Senate plan will focus on a series of key priorities: no new or increased state taxes or fees, lower state spending, and a greater state emphasis on private-sector economic growth.

“We’re committed to a new state budget that addresses key short-term challenges and begins putting in place the foundation for long-term tax relief, job creation and a business climate that won’t be ranked, like it is today, as America’s worst.  We need to move New York in a new and better direction,” said O’Mara.

Senate unveils annual Women's History Month exhibit, includes tribute to Eileen Collins

Albany, N.Y., March 14—As part of its annual March recognition of Women’s History Month, the New York State Senate is unveiling an exhibit today in the Legislative Office Building in Albany honoring “Women of Distinction” throughout New York’s history in the arts, science, government, military, labor, education, and social reform.

State Senator Tom O’Mara said that the Senate exhibit features a tribute to the career and life of astronaut and Elmira native Eileen M. Collins.  The Senate first included Collins in its historical exhibit in 2007.

O'Mara releases results of online budget survey as Senate and Assembly prepare to release plans

Elmira, N.Y., March 13—“That single answer alone delivers a loud-and-clear local message that the state bureaucracy should be streamlined and made more cost effective for taxpayers,”  State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-Big Flats) said today as he released the results of his online survey on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2011-2012 proposed state budget showing 97% of the survey’s respondents support proposals to consolidate, restructure and reduce the cost of the state bureaucracy.

Local GST BOCES student honored

Albany, N.Y., March 10—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and State Assemblyman Christopher Friend (R-C, Big Flats) congratulated Joseph Barr of Montour Falls, who was among 20 adult education students from across New York State honored on Wednesday, March 9 by the New York Association for Continuing/Community Education (NYACCE).

The organization’s 28th Annual Awards Ceremony and Legislative Forum was on Wednesday in Albany.  Barr, representing the Greater Southern Tier (GST) BOCES, received a “Student of the Year 2011” award from the association.

O'Mara-sponsored legislation to strengthen military voting signed into law

Albany, N.Y., March 9—New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law today legislation (S.3500) sponsored by State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), chairman of the Senate Elections Committee, to ensure that special elections in New York State provide more time for military absentee ballots to be mailed and counted.

The occasion marks the first piece of legislation that O'Mara has sponsored as a member of the Senate that’s been signed into law.  Prior to his election to the Senate last November, O'Mara served as a state assemblyman for three consecutive terms beginning in 2004.
