Senator O'Mara questions the Cuomo administration on the future of Monterey Shock

Albany, N.Y., February 5—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), continuing the local grassroots effort to convince the Cuomo administration to reverse its decision to close the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility later this year, today directly questioned the state’s corrections commissioner on the decision at a legislative budget hearing in Albany.

Senate approves 'Public Assistance Integrity Act' to prohibit abuses of public assistance benefits

Albany, N.Y., February 4—The State Senate today approved, with strong bipartisan support, legislation co-sponsored by State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to enact what’s called the “Public Assistance Integrity Act.”  The act would prohibit public assistance recipients from using their state-administered electronic benefit transfer (EBT) debit cards to purchase tobacco, alcoholic beverages or lottery tickets, or to use their EBT cards to make withdrawals from ATMs at liquor stores, casinos or adult entertainment facilities such as strip clubs.

O'Mara says new Medicaid fraud recovery report highlights effectiveness of Salient data-mining technology; believes even more abuse, fraud and waste can be uncovered

Albany, N.Y., February 4— State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) said that today's report from the state Office of the Medicaid Inspector General (OMIG) that New York recouped more than $851 million in Medicaid fraud recoveries in 2013 is good news, and it highlights the effectiveness of data-mining fraud prevention software like that developed by the Horseheads-based Salient Management Company.

O'Mara, Palmesano holding community meetings in Steuben County next week

Corning, N.Y., January 24—New York State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R-C-I, Corning) will hold a series of community meetings across the region throughout 2014, beginning next week with public forums in the Steuben County towns of Howard and Erwin.

The local lawmakers said that the meetings are informal and open to the public.  They’re aimed at giving local residents an opportunity to directly share their concerns, opinions and suggestions for better government.

BUDGET TIME

On the economic and fiscal reform fronts, several of Governor Cuomo's key 2014-15 state budget proposals are in step with my own overriding priorities: upstate economic growth and community development, and overall state fiscal reform.  

In particular, I've long promoted tax and regulatory relief as one way to spark a revitalization of Upstate New York’s manufacturing sector. As the governor previously announced, his proposed budget includes a series of tax cuts aimed at upstate manufacturers and pledges a focus on regulatory reform.

Governor Cuomo’s recent comments have proven extremely divisive and inflammatory. I’ve heard from many constituents who believe these statements reveal an intolerance toward the strong beliefs and principles they hold together with thousands upon thousands of “conservative” New Yorkers – many citizens, in fact, I’m proud to represent and work alongside to seek a better future for our children and grandchildren in Upstate New York where many of us were born, raised and still live our lives and try to raise our own families with the same sense of traditions and values.

Cuomo administration calls today's Monterey Shock graduation ceremony the last, but O'Mara says local effort to save facility will continue (Updated, January 24)

Elmira, N.Y., January 23—Although the Cuomo administration continues to mark today’s graduation ceremony at the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility as the last one before the administration shuts down  the facility later this year, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) said today that the local, grassroots effort to convince the governor to reverse the decision will continue.
