Albany, N.Y., January 28-At today's legislative budget hearing in Albany, Senator O'Mara questioned New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens on Governor Cuomo's budget proposals for environmental conservation.

O'Mara expressed some frustration over the DEC's decision making process.

Senator O'Mara questions NYS Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball on Gov. Cuomo's proposals for Southern Tier farmers

Albany, N.Y., January 28--At a legislative budget hearing in Albany today, Senator O'Mara questioned state Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball on Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposal to create a $30-million farmland preservation fund for the Southern Tier.

O'Mara believes the proposal pays "short shrift" to regional farmers.

O'Mara named new chairman of Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, will also serve as a member on nine additional committees including Agriculture, Energy, and Transportation

Albany, N.Y., January 22—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), beginning his third term representing New York’s 58th Senate District, has been named the new chairman of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee.

The appointment was announced today at the Capitol by Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos.  Since 2011, O’Mara has headed the Senate Elections Committee.

Albany, N.Y., January 21—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today called Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed 2015-2016 state budget “not aggressive enough on creating Southern Tier jobs.”  

O’Mara said, “I’ll keep on saying it: New York government needs to stay focused, more than anything else, on taking action after action after action on Upstate manufacturing job growth and eliminating the crushing burdens of mandates, regulations and taxes.  It begins and ends with addressing these priorities. The governor’s blueprint is not aggressive enough on these priorities, and it’s not aggressive enough on creating Southern Tier jobs.

Cuomo pits Upstate regions against each other in competition for economic development aid ~ O'Mara, others say much more needs to be done to turn around Upstate

In Rochester yesterday, Governor Cuomo announced an Upstate economic development competition that will pit seven Upstate regions against each other.  Under the governor's plan, three regions will ultimately share $1.5 billion in state assistance.

Senator O'Mara and other local and statewide leaders expressed some reservations in response to the Cuomo plan and pointed to the need to do much more to turn around the Upstate economy.
