'Bill to honor fallen Dundee soldier advances'

O'Mara, colleagues call for using settlement funds to cut taxes, create jobs, help schools

Elmira, N.Y., July 7—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats) today joined his Senate Republican colleagues to call for New York State to use its share of a recent settlement to accelerate state tax cuts, invest in Upstate job creation, and provide assistance to local schools and property taxpayers.

The U.S. Justice Department and state regulators recently announced a settlement with BNP Paribas, France’s largest bank, resulting in a record fine of nearly $9 billion for violations of U.S. sanctions and other misconduct.

O'Mara: Sign up for emergency preparedness training on July 12th in Hornell

Hornell, N.Y., July 9—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) reminded area residents today that the online registration process is underway for a state-sponsored “Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program” at Hornell High School on Saturday, July 12,  2014.

The program is free of charge but participants must complete the online registration prior to the event.  According to the office of Governor Andrew Cuomo, registration is limited and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Schuyler County awarded state funding to assist soil and water quality practices on area farms

Anti-heroin legislation signed into law, O'Mara co-sponsors actions to 'try to save lives'

Albany, N.Y., June 23—Legislation co-sponsored by State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) to enact a series of anti-heroin initiatives responding to the growing heroin crisis across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and statewide, has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The bill signing took place at Binghamton University. The legislation was approved by both houses of the Legislature last week.

Senate gives final approval to O'Mara-Lifton legislation to combat spread of invasive species

Albany, N.Y., June 20 —The State Senate today gave final legislative approval to legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and statewide, by requiring boaters to take reasonable precautions when launching their boats.

The legislation (S.7851-B/A.9619-B) was approved yesterday by the state Assembly, where it was sponsored by Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton (D/WF- 125th District) of Ithaca.  

It will now be delivered to the governor to be signed into law.

Senate approves bike safety legislation co-sponsored by O'Mara, who says new law locally would help honor memory of Matt Miller

Albany, N.Y., June 19—The State Senate approved legislation last night, co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), to incorporate a “bicycle and pedestrian safety” component into New York State’s pre-licensing driver’s education and examination requirements.

The measure was approved with strong bipartisan support in the Senate, 58 to 1.

O'Mara says legislative agreement on anti-heroin legislation takes crucial first responses, but he criticizes lack of tougher sanctions against dealers

Albany, N.Y., June 18—A three-way agreement announced today between both houses of the Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo will enact a series of anti-heroin initiatives co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) to respond to the growing heroin crisis across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and statewide.

The new laws, which will be approved by the Senate and Assembly by the end of the week, and then signed into law by the governor, will enhance prevention and treatment services, heighten public awareness and education on heroin’s dangers, and increase some criminal penalties to try to deter the spread of the highly addictive drug.

O'Mara signs on to legislation calling for 3-year delay of Common Core

Albany, N.Y., June 17—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) today announced that he will co-sponsor legislation to halt the implementation of the state’s new, controversial Common Core educational standards for three years.

O’Mara, who earlier this year joined what’s become a rapidly building consensus within the Legislature to fully delay Common Core’s implementation, said that supporters of the proposed legislation (S.6604-A/A.8844-A) will be pushing for its enactment before the end of the Legislature’s regularly scheduled session this week.
