Legislature gives go-ahead to O'Mara-sponsored legislation to encourage growth of industrial hemp; Cornell University, Farm Bureau, others support move to strengthen ag industry, create jobs

Albany, N.Y., June 11 —The New York State Legislature today gave final approval to legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-Endwell) to make New York the 16th state in the nation to set the framework for growing industrial hemp as a way to diversify and strengthen New York’s leading agricultural industry.

The legislation (S.7047/A.8297) now goes to Governor Andrew Cuomo to be signed into law.

State Senate approves additional anti-meth legislation sponsored by O'Mara

Albany, N.Y., June 10—On  the same day that the State Senate approved a comprehensive package of of anti-heroin legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), the Senate also approved two pieces of anti-meth legislation that O’Mara has been pushing over the past few years.

O'Mara, Palmesano, and Senate and Assembly colleagues pay tribute to National Spelling Bee co-champ Sriram Hathwar at Capitol

Albany, N.Y., June 10—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano paid tribute at the Capitol today to Sriram Hathwar of Painted Post, this year’s 87th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion.

O’Mara and Palmesano sponsored a Legislative Resolution honoring Hathwar’s achievement, which was presented to all of the members of the State Legislature during today’s Senate and Assembly sessions.  Hathwar was recognized in person by each legislative house.

O'Mara issues reminder on state-sponsored emergency preparedness training program on Saturday, June 7th, in Chemung County ~ online preregistration required, sign up now

Horseheads, N.Y., May 30 — State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) reminded area residents today that a state-sponsored “Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program” will be held at Horseheads High School on Saturday, June 7,  2014.

The program is free of charge but participants must complete an online registration prior to the event.  According to the office of Governor Andrew Cuomo, registration is limited and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
