New law sponsored by O'Mara and Palmesano designates 'Christopher J. Scott Memorial Highway' in tribute to fallen local soldier

Albany, N.Y., July 9—Legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) to designate a portion of  State Route 14A between the town of Reading in Schuyler County and the village of Dundee in Yates County as the “Christopher J. Scott Memorial Highway,” has been signed into law by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

Cuomo approved the measure early last week, on Wednesday, July 3, to coincide with the following day’s Fourth of July observance.  He approved several similar pieces of legislation honoring three other fallen soldiers across New York.

Senator O'Mara sponsoring online summer reading program, 'Dig Into Reading!'

Elmira, N.Y., June 25—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area students and their families that he’s sponsoring “Dig Into Reading!,”  an online summer reading program that the Senate will be promoting throughout the summer of 2013 in partnership with the New York State Library and public libraries across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions.

State Legislature OKs key plank of 'Grown in New York' plan pushed by O'Mara, Senate colleagues: property tax relief

Albany, N.Y., June 20—The Legislature has unanimously approved legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) to place a two-percent cap on annual agricultural land assessment increases and deliver long-awaited and badly needed property tax relief to state farmers.

Albany, N.Y., June 18—The State Senate today gave final legislative approval to legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to restore a $90-million cut in funding to the state Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) that was included in this year’s state budget.

O'Mara. community help celebrate longest continuously owned family farm in New York State

 

On Saturday in the town of Howard, Steuben County, Senator O'Mara joined members of the community to help celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Howard Flats Farm -- the longest continuously owned family farm in New York State.

The dairy farm is currently operated by Phil and Juanita Bennett -- the fifth generation of the Bennett family to stay in farming, with the next generation ready to take over.

"This is a part of American history, a tradition that started 200 years ago with the Bennett family and now working on its sixth generation," O'Mara said at Saturday's community celebration.

O'Mara: Reports signal agreement on funding restoration for people with disabilities

Albany, N.Y., June 13—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) released a statement on today’s news reports that the Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo are working toward an agreement before the end of the legislative session next week to restore a $90-million cut in funding to the state Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) that was included in this year’s state budget.

Senate approves anti-meth legislation co-sponsored by O'Mara, targets meth labs

Albany, N.Y., June 13—The New York State Senate today approved legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to enhance the ability of local police and district attorneys to track and prosecute violations of restrictions on over-the-counter sales of cold medications that are key ingredients used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

O'Mara, colleagues move to end unfunded state mandates as part of comprehensive reform effort

Albany, N.Y., June 10--The State Senate today kicked off a comprehensive effort announced late last week to reform state rules, regulations and mandates by approving a series of relief measures including legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to end the practice of unfunded state mandates on local governments and school districts.

The O’Mara-sponsored legislation was approved by the Senate by a vote of 51 to 9.

Just in time for summer, the long-awaited return of swimming at Stony Brook State Park!

 

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation today announced that the stream-fed swimming pool at Stony Brook State Park in Steuben County will reopen for the season on June 22. The pool has been closed since the end of the 2009 season due to water quality and clarity issues and budget constraints.

NYS gets tougher on texting-while-driving (Updated)

Late last week, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that he has directed the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to implement tougher penalties for texting-while-driving for all drivers, effective immediately, and proposed new penalties for texting-while-driving for young and new drivers.

Additionally, the governor has directed the New York State Police to increase enforcement of the texting-while-driving ban.  According to the governor's office, it will mean more checkpoints and troopers patrolling on the roads across the state throughout the summer.
