O'Mara legislation targets manufacturing, possession and sale of methamphetamine

Elmira, N.Y., April 11 —State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), highlighting the increasing frequency of methamphetamine-related arrests and other incidents across the region over the past few years, announced today that he has introduced legislation in the Senate to significantly increase the criminal penalties for possessing, selling or manufacturing the dangerous and highly addictive drug.

O'Mara on new legislation: No more unfunded state mandates out of Albany

Albany, N.Y., April 4—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) announced today that he is co-sponsoring legislation in the Senate to end the practice of unfunded state mandates on local governments and school districts.

Specifically the legislation (S.1294/A.4861), which has bipartisan sponsorship in the Legislature and is co-sponsored in the Assembly by Assemblyman Chris Friend (R-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C-Corning), would ban the imposition of any future state mandates on local governments and school districts that are not accompanied by state funding to localities to pay for delivering the required programs and services.

O'Mara on state budget: spending control and future tax breaks, but not enough overall

Albany, N.Y., March 27—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today welcomed the ongoing state spending restraint – for the third consecutive year state spending growth will remain below two percent – and the establishment of future tax breaks in the state’s final 2013-14 state budget.

The Senate finished approving the state’s new fiscal plan early this morning, and the Assembly is expected to follow suit and give the budget final legislative approval on Thursday.  It will then be signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo, representing the third year in a row the state budget's been enacted on time.

O'Mara criticizes cut to state Office of People with Developmental Disabilities

Albany, N.Y., March 27—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today criticized Governor Andrew Cuomo for failing to more fully roll back his cut to the state Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) in the final 2013-14 state budget.

O’Mara said that both the Senate and Assembly had called for rejecting and fully restoring the governor’s proposed $120 million or six-percent, across-the-board reduction to OPWDD – the lead state agency overseeing state assistance to programs and services for people with developmental disabilities.

Senate completes action on new state budget early this morning, Assembly to follow on Thursday ~ Find more information and share your own early reaction through Senator O'Mara's latest online poll

Earlier this morning, at approximately 4:30 a.m., the New York State Senate completed its action on the 2013-14 state budget.

Members of the Assembly are scheduled to return to Albany on Thursday to give final legislative approval to this year's new fiscal plan, which will then be delivered to Governor Andrew Cuomo to be signed into law -- representing New York's third consecutive on-time budget.

Local GST BOCES student honored

Albany, N.Y., March 12—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Chris Friend (R,C-Big Flats) congratulated Amanda Martone of Elmira Heights, who was among the adult education students from across New York State honored on Wednesday, March 6th by the New York Association for Continuing/Community Education (NYACCE).

The NYACCE is the professional organization representing adult education professionals statewide.  As part of the organization’s 30th Annual Student of the Year Awards and Legislative Event in Albany, Martone, representing the Greater Southern Tier (GST) BOCES, received a “Student of the Year 2013” award.

Senate GOP's 'Blueprint for Jobs' includes O'Mara's call for manufacturing tax cut, utility tax relief and Hire-a-Vet tax credit

Albany, N.Y., March 8—A comprehensive state Senate Republican plan to jump-start the state economy and create private-sector jobs includes a proposal introduced earlier this year by State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to phase-out the corporate franchise tax for manufacturers across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and statewide.

The plan also includes proposals for a utility tax cut and the creation of a Hire-A-Vet tax credit which O'Mara has pushed over the past several weeks.

O'Mara, Palmesano continue to urge support for a second RenovatingHope project locally ~ Less than one week to go in online voting

Bath, N.Y., March 7—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) today urged area residents to support the veterans assistance organization RenovatingHope by voting daily online in the The Home Depot Foundation’s 2nd annual “Aprons in Action” contest.

In a joint statement, O’Mara and Palmesano said: “We are proud to take every opportunity that we possibly can to support our veterans.  We hope that as many area residents as possible will join us in this effort to help RenovatingHope make a life-changing difference for another local hero.”

O'Mara, Palmesano lead call to boost state support for local roads and bridges

Albany, N.Y., March 6—With final negotiations over the 2013-14 New York State budget kicking into high gear over the next two weeks, a group of state legislators, led by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R-C, Corning), today joined county and town highway superintendents and other local leaders from across New York to call for increased state support for local roads and bridges.

Highway superintendents from throughout the state have been in Albany this week as part of their “2013 Grassroots Advocacy Campaign for Local Roads & Bridges.”

Albany, N.Y., February 28—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), who was one of 18 state senators who voted against the recently enacted NY SAFE Act and spoke at today’s protest rally in Albany, issued the following statement:

“I stand with many citizens and local leaders from across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions in opposition to the NY SAFE Act.  Equally important, we’re opposed to the shoddy legislative process that produced a law that’s full of failings and shortcomings, and places even more state-imposed burdens on already hard-pressed upstate citizens and localities.
