Penn Yan, N.Y., March 7--As state legislators have spent the past several weeks at the capital poring over the details and assessing the impact of Governor Andrew Cuomo's 2012-2013 proposed state budget, Senator Tom O'Mara (R-C, Big Flats) has also been meeting back home throughout his 53rd Senate District with concerned citizens, school superintendents, and many other local representatives, including county legislators.

Senate moves to cut costly new wage notice mandate on employers

Albany, N.Y., February 29—The State Senate today approved legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to roll back a provision of a two-year-old state law that took effect this month and began imposing a new costly state mandate on private-sector employers across New York.

The Senate-approved legislation (S.6063) would immediately eliminate the new mandate.

Area state lawmakers issue reminder on Local Efficiency Grant Program

Mandate Relief Council invites local input -- public hearings announced, new website

Albany, N.Y., February 8—The state’s Mandate Relief Council announced today that it will hold a series of public hearings across upstate New York, including in the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions in March, to give local officials and the public an opportunity to provide direct input on an issue that county leaders and others have identified as a top priority in 2012.

Hammondsport, N.Y., January 31—On the final day of voting in Budget Travel magazine’s online competition to decide the “Coolest Small Town in America 2012,” Hammondsport (Steuben County) is tied for the lead.

Early this morning, Hammondsport and Beaufort, North Carolina had each gathered 34.9% of the vote.

Watch today's legislative budget hearing live beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The Legislature's fiscal committees -- the Senate Finance Committee and the Assembly Ways and Means Committee -- have started a series of joint legislative hearings, 13 in all, on Governor Andrew Cuomo's 2012-2013 proposed state budget.

Today's hearing will examine the governor's proposals for aid to localities and general government operations.
