'RecruitNY' campaign scheduled for the weekend of April 25-26 ~ Many local volunteer fire departments will be hosting events ~ Find out more (UPDATED)

Elmira, N.Y., April 15—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats) reminded area residents today that a number of the region’s volunteer fire departments will hold an Open House during the weekend of April 25-26, 2015 as part of “RecruitNY,” a statewide public awareness initiative sponsored by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) and others to encourage the recruitment of local volunteer firefighters and EMTs.

The annual event is coordinated by FASNY in partnership with the state Association of Fire Districts, Association of Fire Chiefs, Volunteer Fire Police Association and the County Fire Coordinators’ Association.

Elmira, N.Y., April 14—As the nation observes National Volunteer Week from April 12-18, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats), Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) and Assemblyman Chris Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats) said today that they are continuing to sponsor legislation aimed at helping localities recruit and retain volunteer firefighters and other emergency services personnel.

The spot is promoting the Start-Up NY program.

Now the results are starting to come in: 76 jobs so far.

In the entire state. From a program that has spent $28 million advertising its own existence.

Area counties in line for homeland security grants

Elmira, N.Y., April 9—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) said that each of the counties he represents as part of New York’s 58th Senate District will receive public safety and security funding as part of a new package of $233 million in federal grants being distributed statewide to support local emergency response operations.

Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike receives prestigious, historic award from the New York State Sheriffs' Association

Earlier this year, Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike received the New York State Sheriffs' Association Institute's most prestigious award -- the "Sheriff Grover Cleveland Award," an award that the Association has bestowed only three times before in its history. 

It's quite an honor, and well deserved.

O'Mara: Budget increases state aid to local schools, supports local infrastructure, broadband development, agriculture, veterans and more

Albany, N.Y., April 1—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) said today that the 2015-2016 New York State budget includes higher state aid to local schools, a stronger commitment to local infrastructure and broadband development, and enhanced assistance to key economic sectors including agriculture.

After reaching the framework of an agreement on the new, nearly $142-billion state budget over the weekend, the Legislature put the finishing touches on the plan last night and the new budget was delivered to Governor Andrew Cuomo to be signed into law.

O'Mara: New state budget expands support for treating veterans suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder ~ Corning doctor has been driving force behind development of innovative, successful treatment program

Albany, N.Y., March 30—In early March, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) joined several of his Senate colleagues to call for increased state funding to support the expansion of a groundbreaking treatment program for military servicemen and servicewomen suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The 2015-2016 state budget, which will be approved by the Legislature this week and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo, will include $800,000 to help expand the initiative, O’Mara said today.

Breaking News: St. James Mercy Hospital receives critical transition funding ~ Listen to Sen. O'Mara's reaction on AM 1480 WLEA

HORNELL — St. James Mercy Hospital has been awarded $7.5 million under the Health Facility Restructuring Loan (HFRL) program.

The interest-free loan, which is jointly administered by the Dormitory Authority of New York State (DASNY) and the New York State Department of Health, will allow the hospital to continue providing services after March. St. James Mercy Hospital has been relying on funding under the Interim Access assurance Fund (IAAF) since July 1, 2014.
