Cuomo and other elected officials to announce new, bipartisan legislation that would replace the sole trustee at the New York State Common Retirement Fund with a board of trustees and eliminate pay to play in state public pension funds.

Hero superintendent receives state awards at S. Orangetown Middle School

BLAUVELT - Flanked by state, local and school officials, South Orangetown Schools Superintendent Kenneth Mitchell received awards and praise at a ceremony yesterday honoring his actions on Tuesday.

Mitchell, who pinned a gunman to the floor of his office in South Orangetown Middle School, was honored by state Sen. Thomas P. Morahan and Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee at the middle school.

Region's senators look to pressure MTA

State Sen. Thomas Morahan and four other Republican state senators are creating a task force to come up with ways to make the MTA do a better job of serving Lower Hudson Valley residents.

The task force, which is still being formed, will primarily focus on service improvements by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Dutchess counties.

Senate Passes Bill To Create “Airline Passengers’ Bill Of Rights”

New York State Senator Thomas P. Morahan  announced New York State Senate passage of legislation to provide passengers stranded on airplanes at New York airports with certain basic amenities to make their wait more tolerable. The bill (S.5050-C) also creates a new Airline Consumer Advocate Office to help airline passengers in New York report air travel service problems.

The legislation reflects an agreement with the State Assembly. The Assembly is expected to take up and pass the legislation before the end of session.

Hudson Valley Delegation To Continue Fighting MTA’s Comprehensive Fare Increase Plan

The State Senate Majority’s Hudson Valley Delegation today called upon Governor Eliot Spitzer to reject any increase in the cost of the MTA’s Metro-North commuter fares or tolls for MTA bridges and Tunnels.

At a press conference in New York City today the Governor announced that the MTA would drop its plans to impose an increase in basic subway and bus fares, but he failed to rule out such an increase in the cost of Metro-North service, monthly subway commuter passes, or tolls on MTA bridges and tunnels.
