This week the news has been full of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plan to cut as many as 6,700 teachers in an effort to plug a $5 billion budget deficit. This will have an undeniable effect on our city’s children and the quality of the education they receive, and their prospects for a brighter future.

Senate passes Stavisky bill requiring transparency for SUNY, CUNY and Higher Education Services Corp. trustees

The New York State Senate unanimously passed Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky’s bill that would increase transparency of the Board of Trustees of the state and city universities and the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) by making resolutions and board actions available to the public seven days after the meeting.

State Senate passes MTA budget, prevents bridge tolls and fare hikes, and promotes reform

A national economic downturn that hit New York particularly hard left the state with a $17 billion budget deficit. However, education was prioritized in the budget we recently passed for the first time in many years.
