Senators Stavisky, Stewart-Cousins Celebrate Win for Compassionate Care

Albany, NY—Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) hailed the passage of the Compassionate Care Act on Friday. The legislation establishes the state’s first medical marijuana program and includes provisions to ensure that the drug is reserved only for patients with serious conditions to prevent abuse. The program will be effective in 18 months.

Senator Stavisky Toughens Penalties for Drunk Drivers

Albany, NY—The New York State Senate yesterday passed S640A, a bill that automatically revokes for six months and then institutes a one-year probationary period on licenses of people convicted of vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. The bill, introduced by Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) is an expansion on another drunk driving law the Senator co-sponsored in 2005 popularly known as “VaSean’s Law.”

149th Street Bridge Must be Completely Rebuilt, Slated to Open in November 2015

Queens, NY—Immediately following a meeting with New York City Department of Transportation Queens Borough Commissioner Dalila Hall and other DOT officials, Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing), Assemblyman Ron Kim (D-Flushing) and Council Member Peter Koo (D-Flushing) announced at a press conference at Queens Borough Hall that the long defunct 149th Street Bridge must be completely rebuilt before it can be re-opened to vehicular traffic.

Jukay Hsu

An immigrant raised in Flushing, Queens, Jukay Hsu’s interest in economic and community development began while he attended Stuyvesant High School. There, he was Chairman of the American Red Cross Queens Chapter Youth Group and Student Body President.

In 2008, following his graduation from Harvard College, Jukay joined the United States Army. He served as an officer in the 27th Infantry Regiment, where he commanded a rifle platoon in Iraq, and earned the Bronze Star Medal as Combat Infantryman’s Badge. Jukay led economic development and governance initiatives for two Iraqi districts, and founded the first private provincial radio station with Iraqi reporters.

Senate Passes Sea of Japan/East Sea Co-Naming Bill

Albany, NY— Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) today announced that the State Senate passed S.6599-D, a bill that would require new textbooks purchased in New York State that reference the Sea of Japan to note that it is also called the East Sea. Passage of this initiative is the culmination of over two years of partnership with Korean community advocates and Queens legislator Senator Stavisky, who led the lobbying and education effort for the bill within the State Senate.

Flushing, NY—Today Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) and Assemblyman Edward Braunstein (D-Bayside) introduced Senate bill S6570 that would require all new textbooks used in New York State to refer to the body of water that separates the Japanese archipelago from the Asian mainland as the East Sea as well as the Sea of Japan.
