Summer Book Giveaway for Students Enrolled in "Pre-K for All" - New Program Designed to Support Kindergarten Transition and Curb Summer Learning Loss

Chancellor Fariña today announced a book giveaway program for all 4-year-olds enrolled in free, high quality pre-K programs across the City. This free package – which includes five high-quality books, supplementary activities, and a letter from the Chancellor – will go to students participating in the first, historic year of Pre-K for All. Students in both full-day and half-day programs will all receive the books in addition to children enrolled in integrated special education settings and District 75 programs. The Chancellor made the announcement at Get Set Kindergarten’s stepping up ceremony in Brooklyn, where she handed out books to students and their families.

Senator Montgomery's Anti-Shackling Legislation Receives Final Legislative Approval

Senator Montgomery's Anti-Shackling legislation (S.983-A) received final legislative approval on June 23, 2015. It now awaits consideration by the Governor before becoming law.

The bill prohibits the shackling of female inmates who are pregnant, in labor or eight weeks postpartum during transporation or hospitalization, except under extraordinary circumstances.

Wildlife Conservation Society's Zoos and Aquariums Accepting Applications for Summer Discovery Guide Program at the Prospect Park Zoo and New York Aquarium

Discovery Guides are volunteers who are important to the day-to-day operation of the zoos and aquarium. They work within the zoo and aquarium’s education department to interpret exhibits, interact with visitors, and assist with public events and activities.

Senator Montgomery Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday

Senate Resolution No. 986

WHEREAS, On March 7, 1965, 600 civil rights demonstrators marched 54 miles from Selma to the state capital of Montgomery, Alabama; and

WHEREAS, The demonstrators organized to promote black voter registration and challenge the killing of Jimmie Lee Jackson, who had been killed by an Alabama state trooper three weeks earlier while trying to protect his mother at a civil rights demonstration; and

WHEREAS, For 100 years after Emancipation laws, intimidation tactics, and violence prevented African-Americans from going to the polls; and

WHEREAS, In the city of Selma, African-Americans comprised more than half the population yet were only 2% of the registered voters; and

SERENDIPTY Residents Parade On Albany, Advocate for a Bigger Share of State Budget Funding

DYCD Begins Accepting Applications for New York City's Summer Youth Employment Program - City Residents Ages 14-24 May Apply for Lottery Until Friday, April 10

The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Commissioner Bill Chong today announced that DYCD will accept applications for the 2015 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) from Monday, March 2 through Friday, April 10, 2015. SYEP, the nation’s largest summer youth employment initiative, provides New York City young people between the ages of 14 and 24 with up to six weeks of entry-level experience at worksites in all five boroughs. Participants are selected by lottery for the program, which runs from July 6 through August 15.
