Montgomery Law Lifts Discretionary Ban on Occupational Licenses for People Released From Prison

September 10, 2008 (Albany, NY): New Yorkers will no longer be arbitrarily denied a license to barber or practice cosmetology because they spent time in prison under a new law authored by State Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn).

The law (Chapter 469), which is sponsored in the Assembly by Assemblyman Michael Benjamin (D-Bronx), prohibits licensing agencies from disqualifying someone from licensure as a barber or cosmetologist solely on the basis of a criminal conviction.

New Montgomery/Robinson Law Allows New Yorkers Living and Dead to be Recognized as Adoptive Parents

Albany, NY (July 21, 2008): Under legislation recently signed into law by Governor David Paterson, adopted children will be able to claim two parents of record, even if one parent dies before the adoption is final.


The bill (S.3158/A.1942; Chapter 160) is sponsored by Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Annette Robinson (D-Brooklyn).

Legislature Approves Montgomery/Peoples Bill Requiring Distribution Of HIV/AIDS Prevention Information To Persons In Prison & Upon Release

Albany, NY (June 19, 2008): The State Senate gave final approval this week to legislation (S.8508/A.8849) that requires New York correctional facilities to provide people in prison with information about the prevention of HIV, and how to obtain HIV-testing and counseling services upon release.

The legislation, sponsored by Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples (D-Buffalo), now goes to Governor Paterson for approval before becoming law.
