Senator Montgomery thanks Reverend Carol Warner Ligons for delivering the innvocation at the start of the April 11 Senate Session. Reverend Warner Ligons is the President of the National Association Women of the Church of God and the sister of Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson.
Senator Montgomery greets incoming NYC Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott during the April 12, 2011, meeting of the Senate Education Committee of which Montgomery is a member. Praising Mr. Walcott for his commitment to children and their parents, Senator Montgomery said that she and her colleagues look forward to working with him. Mr. Walcott's appointment is awaiting final approval from the State Department of Education.
Representatives of Planned Parenthood of New York City and the NYC Civil LibertiesUnion thank Senator Montgomery for affirming her support for the preservation of state and federal funding that enables their organization to deliver quality primary and preventive health care.
Representatives of PACC, Neighbors Helping Neighbors and the Fifth Avenue Committee met with Senator Montgomery to thank her for her support of tenant protection laws and all of her work to preserve affordable rental housing. Senator Montgomery is a sponsor of the Omnibus Tenant Protection Act (S.2783-A) that renews and strengthens safeguards for tenants.
Senator Montgomery honored Dr. Frances Fox Piven upon the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the publication of Regulating the Poor: The Functions of Public Welfare, a book she wrote about social policy in the United States. The Senator is joined by Senators Gustavo Rivera and Bill Perkins.
Senator Montgomery at a basketball tournament organized by the Brothers of the Alpha Upsilon Chapter “Brooklyn Omega,” that combines sports with social responsibility. All the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, an historically black fraternal organization, are college educated and a great role model for the young men who competed at MS 113 in Fort Greene. Among them is Robert Cornegy, an elected Democratic State Committee Representative. The fraternity promotes social and cultural program that help to uplift communities.
