Students Lobby for After-School Program Funding

Students, parents and teachers from P.S. 24 in Sunset Park ask Senator Montgomery to support their After-School Program, which is facing tough financial times due to the  Governor proposed budget cuts. The Senator pledged to do all that she can to restore funding to $30.5 million, an amount that was earmarked for after-school programs in last year's budget.

Senator Montgomery Support MWBEs

March 2010: Senator Montgomery (seated, center) joins with her legislative colleagues  to announce the First Annual Minority Women Business Enterprise (MWBE) Awareness Day. To commemorate the event, more than 300 MWBEs came to the Capital City to discuss their business enterprises and press for legislative reforms that increase their access to the state contracts.

Senator Velmanette Montgomery (center) joined her colleagues at the State Capitol in welcoming the Honorable Roberto B. Saladin, Dominican Ambassador to the United States and the Honorable Rafael Evans, Esq., Dominican Consul General to New York to the First Annual Celebration of Dominican Heritage Month in New York State sponsored by the New York Senate Puerto Rican and Latino Caucus Members. February 27 is the anniversary of Dominican Independence, a holiday equally embraced by the 800,000 Dominicans residing in New York State as by the citizens on the island of the Dominican Republic.

Senator Montgomery at a dedication ceremony at Janes United Methodist Church

Janes United Methodist Church is named for Edmond Storer Janes (1807-1876) who in 1844 was elected Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The church can trace its roots to 1858 when a Sunday school was started in a private home. Janes Mission, located at Patchen Avenue and Monroe Street, was built ca.1859 at a cost of $3,000 and had a seating capacity of 400.
