Senator Montgomery Memorializes Life of NYS Court of Appeals Judge Theodore T. Jones, Jr.

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to those singular individuals who devoted their purposeful lives to preserving the rights and protecting the welfare of the citizens of their community and the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to mourn the death of New York State Court of Appeals Judge Theodore T. Jones, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Judge Theodore Jones, Jr., one of seven jurists on New York's top court, died on Monday, November 5, 2012, at the age of 68; and

Job Mashariki, former President/CEO and Founder of Black Veterans for Social Justice was named today to the NYS Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame. State Senator Velmanette Montgomery nominated Mr. Mashariki for this special designation. He served his country honorably as a Specialist Four in the United States Army.

NYS Senate Gives Final Legislative Approval to Montgomery Bill Authorizing Nurse Practitioners to Sign Death Certificates

The State Senate gave final legislative approval today  to a bill permitting New York's more than 13,000 nurse practitioners to sign death certificates in the same manner as physicians and other authorized parties. The bill (S.325) is sponsored by Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn), who is a member of the Senate Health Committee.

Senator Montgomery Votes Down Senate Republican's Budget Resolution, Faults Proposal for Dismissing Juvenile Justice Reform

Dear Constituents and Juvenile Justice Advocates:

The Republican-controlled Senate and the Assembly have each submitted their budget bills, which accept and reject portions of the Governor’s recommended State spending plan for FY 2011-12.

While I was pleased by many of the funding restorations contained in the Senate’s budget resolution, I voted against the proposal because it hurts our children -- our young people who are on the road to ruin because we, as a State, are not acting responsibly to reform New York’s juvenile justice system.

Senator Montgomery Votes to Preserve Seniority & Tenure Rights of Educators

At a recent meeting of the Senate Education Committee, Senator Montgomery spoke out against the Last In, First Out (LIFO) bill (S.3501), which attempts to leverage the state’s current fiscal crisis to eliminate the seniority and tenure rights of all New Year City educators. Moreover, the bill is a blatant attempt at union busting, demonstrating a clear and dangerous disregard for the rights of educators that have been negotiated and defined through collective bargaining.

Juvenile Justice Reform: A Call To Action




Facing a system in crisis and an economy on the brink of collapse, Senate Democrats joined with child advocates and clergy to announce their support for Gov. Cuomo’s plans to reform the broken juvenile justice system, and call on Senate Republicans to drop their political demands that stand in the way of needed reform. Led by Senator Velmanette Montgomery, ranking member on the Senate’s Children and Families Services Committee, Senate Democrats sought to build on proposals included in Gov. Cuomo’s 2011-12 Executive Budget by announcing additional policy initiatives to create greater oversight and cost savings for New York taxpayers.

Statement by Senator Montgomery on Hand Gun Crimes

We need to take immediate action to get guns off our streets. I am proud to co-sponsor the Crime Gun Identification Act, also known as the “Microstamping” bill (S.6005/A.6468).

This bill would require engravings on the internal mechanisms of all semiautomatic pistols manufactured, sold or transported to New York State.
