NYC Department of Education to Open Registration Centers Across the City This Week for New Students

The New York City Department of Education today announced that it will open 12 Student Registration Centers on Wednesday, August 31, to enroll new students for the opening of school. Procedures vary across the following categories of students: All new high school students or those re-entering the system after an absence—both general education and special education— should register at a Student Registration Center in their borough of residence. New or re-entering general education elementary and middle school students without a zoned school should also register at a Student Registration Center in their borough of residence.

Governor Cuomo's 2012 Executive Budget and Reform Plan Outlines Vision to Continue Building a New New York

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today unveiled his 2012-13 Executive Budget and Reform Plan, which expands on the historic reforms enacted last year to continue building a New New York. As a result of the tough decisions and bipartisan cooperation of the past year, the State is able to close the current deficit without broad cuts, new taxes, fees or gimmicks. In addition, the Governor’s Executive Budget proposes major reforms to reduce the cost of government for taxpayers, implements accountability in our schools to put students first, and puts the State in a position to leverage billions of dollars in private sector investment to grow the economy and create jobs.

NY Youth Works Program Provides $62 Million for Job Training and $25 Million in Tax Credits to Combat High Unemployment among Inner City Youth

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the launch of "NY Youth Works," a statewide program to combat the unacceptably high unemployment rates among inner city youth in communities across New York. The new program, passed last month in an extraordinary session of the state legislature, includes $25 million in tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed and disadvantaged youth and $62 million to support job training programs.

Campaigning for Summer Jobs at Youth Action Day 2012

Senator Montgomery joined with representatives of the Center for Family Life in Sunset Park to support their request to the Legislature for the inclusion of $35 million in the final 2012-13 State Budget.

Governor Cuomo has proposed $25 million, a $10 million cut from last year's appropriation. The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) provides young people with important job opportunities and fosters work and life skill development, including responsibility, punctuality, money managment, teamwork and meeting workplace expections.

Approximately 130,000 New York City apply for jobs under SYEP and only 31,000 get jobs.  

Children's Institute Announces Funding for Early Intervention Programs

The Children's Institute is now accepting applications for funding for school year 2012-2013 to support new Primary Mental Health Project (Primary Project) programs in schools.

Primary Project is an evidence-based prevention and early intervention program designed to screen for and address school adjustment difficulties in students who are in kindergarten to third grade. Currently in 150 school sacross the state and serving approximately 3,000 students, Primary Project interventes to correct behaviors and support positive development before more costly inteventions are required.
