Student Loan Relief for New Yorkers Affected by Hurricane Sandy - Disaster Counties Eligible for 90 Day Grace Period

Governor Cuomo has authorized New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) to grant temporary student loan relief to New Yorkers who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. If requested, New Yorkers in Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Rockland Suffolk and Westchester counties are now eligible to receive a 90 day grace period, from October 27th, 2012 to January 25th, 2013, in order to repay their student loan payments. All members of the military who have been called to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy will also be eligible.

Governor Cuomo Outlines 2013-2014 Executive Budget to Maintain Fiscal Responsibility and Continue to Invest in Economic Growth

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo unveiled the proposed 2013-14Executive Budget and Management Plan that builds on two years of balanced, fiscally responsible budgeting and invests in economic development, education reform, rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy, provides support to local governments and school districts, and includes no new taxes or fees.

Highlights of the Executive Budget:

· Eliminates $1.3 billion budget gap with no new taxes or fees. The expected gap for 2013-14 was projected to be $17.4 billion prior to the last two responsible budgets.

· Holds spending increases below 2 percent for third consecutive year.


Department of Financial Services to Speek Resolution of Insurance Claims in Areas Affected by SANDY

The NYS Department of Financial Services (DFS) is setting new rules to speed the processing of insurance claims in areas affected by Storm Sandy. The new regulation reduces the amount of time an insurer can delay its decision on a claim, and requires insurers to report to the Department on how many claims it is delaying and the reasons for the delays.


Joint Legislative Forum on School Governance Reform October 8, 2013 - Public Testimony is Invited

(Brooklyn, New York): Responding to the public’s call for greater transparency of the NYC public education system, state lawmakers will hold a legislative forum to solicit comment on legislation that proposes sweeping school governance reform (S.1406/A.792).The bill seeks to restore a Democratic system of checks and balances by changing the composition of the Board of Education, ending mayoral control of the school system, and giving parents greater involvement in education policy creation and decision making.


New Initiative to Transform Schools In Distressed Communities Into Hubs for Children and Family Services Providers

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today launched the NYS Community Schools initiative, a new statewide program he announced in the 2013 State of the State address that will transform schools in distressed communities into hubs for a wide range of support services for children and their families including health care, counseling, nutrition and job preparation services.

Under NYS Community Schools, approximately 30 schools will be selected in the first round to receive grants of up to $500,000 each over three years. These grants will go toward building strong community partnerships that deliver critical academic, health, extra-curricular and social services primarily in the school building.


Adelaide L. Sanford Institute Fall 2013 Parent Sessions Announced - Sessions are FREE to Registered Participants

The Parent Common Core Awareness Sessions will provide parents and care givers the opportunity to learn about the changes in curriculum content (English Language Arts & Mathematics), classroom instruction and learning opportunities for students in kindergarten – grade 12.

During these sessions participants will learn about:

1. complete analysis of the most recent 2013 test results in English Language Arts and Math;

2. resources for parents on what their children should be learning in English Language Arts and Mathematics in each grade, once the standards are fully implemented;

3. activities that parents can implement at home to support their children’s learning;
