Senate Passes Bill Giving Tenants FREE Meeting Space in Public Housing

Standing up for the rights of tenants to organize, the New York State Senate passed legislation to eliminate the financial burden to tenants who want to conduct meetings in public housing, announced Senator Velmanette Montgomery, a sponsor of the bill. 

The legislation (S.3114)  bans the imposition of a fee currently placed on tenants wishing to hold a group meeting. Under the bill, tenants would have access to a location owned by the authority which has been set aside as an area of common use for all tenants, including any community or social room.

Faith-Based Community Rallies for Rent Reform

Members of the clergy from Brooklyn and elsewhere throughout the City stand with Senator Montgomery and her colleagues in calling for the passage of the Omnibus Tenant Protection Bill that not only extends the rent laws but strengthens rent controls and tenant protections. Clergy members who rallied in support of the pro-tenant legislation include Bishop Fernando Rodriguez; Bishop Calixto Rodriguez; Apostle James Duncan; Rev. Dr. David Olivencia; Rev. Dr. Victor Collier; Rev. McKinley Johnson; Rev. Willie Stovall; Rev. Norita Love; and Pastor Jancie Liefmore. Senator Montgomery is also joined by (to the Senator's right, l-r) Senators Liz Krueger,  Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Martin Dilan.

Governor Cuomo's 2012 Executive Budget and Reform Plan Outlines Vision to Continue Building a New New York

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today unveiled his 2012-13 Executive Budget and Reform Plan, which expands on the historic reforms enacted last year to continue building a New New York. As a result of the tough decisions and bipartisan cooperation of the past year, the State is able to close the current deficit without broad cuts, new taxes, fees or gimmicks. In addition, the Governor’s Executive Budget proposes major reforms to reduce the cost of government for taxpayers, implements accountability in our schools to put students first, and puts the State in a position to leverage billions of dollars in private sector investment to grow the economy and create jobs.

NY Youth Works Program Provides $62 Million for Job Training and $25 Million in Tax Credits to Combat High Unemployment among Inner City Youth

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the launch of "NY Youth Works," a statewide program to combat the unacceptably high unemployment rates among inner city youth in communities across New York. The new program, passed last month in an extraordinary session of the state legislature, includes $25 million in tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed and disadvantaged youth and $62 million to support job training programs.

Senator Montgomery Announces NYSABPRL's 41st Annual Legislative Conference Workshop & Event Schedule

The 41st Annual Legislative Conference of the NYS Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators will convene on Friday, February 17th and conclude on Sunday, February 19th, 2012. The theme of this year’s conference is “Open Doors to Employment, Opens Doors to Empowerment."

Senator Montgomery Speaks Out Against Privatizing Public Education

During a budget debate on the Senate floor, Senator Montgomery protests the Senate Republican's one-house budget proposal that would allow for-profit businesses and corporations to establish charter schools. The Senator said that "New York's public education system is not for sale."

Governor Cuomo and Legislative Leaders Announce Agreement on 2012-13 State Budget

Governor Cuomo released the following announcement on March 27, 2012:

The Budget continues the Governor’s commitment to fiscal responsibility while creating jobs and strengthening communities across the state. It closes a multi-billion dollar deficit with no new taxes, fees or gimmicks, limits spending growth to two percent or below for the second year in a row, and launches the New York Works Task Force to invest billions of dollars to rebuild the state's roads, bridges, parks, and other infrastructure and create tens of thousands of jobs.

Public Health Experts, Human Rights Advocates Join Senator Montgomery in Calling for Law Barring Use of Condoms as Evidence of Prostitution

Albany, NY: Public health experts, human rights activists and advocates for sex workers and the LGBT community, joined with NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) in calling for the passage of the Senator’s legislation (S.323/A.1008) that would barr the use of condoms as evidence of prostitution.
