Advocacy Academy Participants Get Lesson in Civic Participation

Senator Montgomery with participants and supporters of the Advocacy Academy, a program sponsored by the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College and funded by the Senator. Also pictured with the group is Senator Kevin Parker (center). Academy participants, who are comprised of faith and community based organization leaders,  came to Albany as part of their 16 week-learning experience in advocating for their groups and the issues that are important to them. Among other things, the Advocacy Academy offered practical instruction on how to impact government policies through effective interaction with elected officials and governmental agencies.

NYS Senate Gives Final Legislative Approval to Montgomery Bill Authorizing Nurse Practitioners to Sign Death Certificates

The State Senate gave final legislative approval today  to a bill permitting New York's more than 13,000 nurse practitioners to sign death certificates in the same manner as physicians and other authorized parties. The bill (S.325) is sponsored by Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn), who is a member of the Senate Health Committee.

Faith-Based Community Rallies for Rent Reform

Members of the clergy from Brooklyn and elsewhere throughout the City stand with Senator Montgomery and her colleagues in calling for the passage of the Omnibus Tenant Protection Bill that not only extends the rent laws but strengthens rent controls and tenant protections. Clergy members who rallied in support of the pro-tenant legislation include Bishop Fernando Rodriguez; Bishop Calixto Rodriguez; Apostle James Duncan; Rev. Dr. David Olivencia; Rev. Dr. Victor Collier; Rev. McKinley Johnson; Rev. Willie Stovall; Rev. Norita Love; and Pastor Jancie Liefmore. Sex and the City Star Cynthia Nixon Lobbies Lawmakers on Marriage Equality

 

Senator Montgomery is joined by Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon who traveled to the New York's State Capitol on Tuesday, June 14 to urge lawmakers to pass a marriage equality bill. The bill was approved by the Assembly that day.

Senator Montgomery, a long-time supporter of marriage equality noted that proponents of the bill have managed to close a vote gap in the Senate in a very short period of time but that the bill is still one vote shy of victory.

Senate Passes Bill Giving Tenants FREE Meeting Space in Public Housing

Standing up for the rights of tenants to organize, the New York State Senate passed legislation to eliminate the financial burden to tenants who want to conduct meetings in public housing, announced Senator Velmanette Montgomery, a sponsor of the bill. 

The legislation (S.3114)  bans the imposition of a fee currently placed on tenants wishing to hold a group meeting. Under the bill, tenants would have access to a location owned by the authority which has been set aside as an area of common use for all tenants, including any community or social room.

Senator Montgomery greets incoming NYC Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott during the April 12, 2011, meeting of the Senate Education Committee of which Montgomery is a member. Praising Mr. Walcott for his commitment to children and their parents, Senator Montgomery said that she and her colleagues look forward to working with him. Mr. Walcott's appointment is awaiting final approval from the State Department of Education.

Senator Montgomery Votes Down Senate Republican's Budget Resolution, Faults Proposal for Dismissing Juvenile Justice Reform

Dear Constituents and Juvenile Justice Advocates:

The Republican-controlled Senate and the Assembly have each submitted their budget bills, which accept and reject portions of the Governor’s recommended State spending plan for FY 2011-12.

While I was pleased by many of the funding restorations contained in the Senate’s budget resolution, I voted against the proposal because it hurts our children -- our young people who are on the road to ruin because we, as a State, are not acting responsibly to reform New York’s juvenile justice system.

Representatives of PACC, Neighbors Helping Neighbors and the Fifth Avenue Committee met with Senator Montgomery to thank her for her support of tenant protection laws and all of her work to preserve affordable rental housing.
