SENATE PASSES BILL TO CRIMINALIZE SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA

The New York State Senate today passed legislation to criminalize the sale and possession of synthetic marijuana. The bill (S.6694), sponsored by Senator John Flanagan (R-C-I, East Northport),  would also criminalize the sale and possession of hallucinogenic chemicals deceptively called “bath salts.”

 "These chemicals are extremely dangerous and are a growing health concern for people of all ages," said Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson).  "This legislation will keep these drugs off our streets and out of the hands of our children," said Larkin.

Nothing fake about the dangers of synthetic marijuana: Believed harmless by many, ‘fake pot’ is a dangerous substance whose growing use is spreading through our communities. Herbs sprayed with toxic chemicals, these over-the-counter drugs have been responsible for a number of violent acts and can have devastating effects on a user’s health. To protect our families the Senate has passed S.6694, a bill that prohibits the sale and possession of these hazardous substances. With side-effects as bad or worse than a number of illegal drugs, it’s time that synthetic marijuana is removed from our stores.

SENATE PASSES "I-STOP" TO REDUCE PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE

In response to the escalating problem of prescription drug abuse, the state Senate and Assembly have passed legislation that would make significant changes to the way prescription drugs are distributed and monitored in New York State. 

The bill (S7637), sponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza (R-I, Staten Island) and Senator Kemp Hannon (R, Nassau), Chairman of the Senate Health Committee, includes "real time" prescription tracking to provide more information to doctors and pharmacists, in an effort to prevent deaths from abuse and overdoses of prescription drugs, particularly painkillers.

LARKIN NAMED TO NEW TASK FORCE ON HEROIN AND OPIOID ADDICTION

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced that he has been named to the new Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction.  The task force was formed in response to the sharp rise in the use of these drugs across New York State.

            Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today announced that the Hudson Valley regional forum of the Joint Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center in Newburgh, New York.
