"Don’t be fooled by anyone offering ‘free government grants,’ said Senator Larkin. "This latest scam has a new twist--someone calls you making a phony claim that the government is giving people money to pay their taxes. I know that this time of year, it’s tempting to want to believe there is something that can help during tax season, but under no circumstances should you engage these people in conversation and give out any personal information over the phone.

Larkin Awards 'kidscount' Grants To Area Schools

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today awarded all public elementary schools and middle schools housing elementary grades in the 39th Senate district with a special grant through Larkin's "KidsCount" program.

"It's a fact that elementary school teachers are constantly using money out of their own pockets to purchase materials, supplies, and those extra little things for their students and their classrooms," said Senator Larkin. "They work with children every day and know best what children need in the classroom.

Senate Passes Death Penalty Legislation

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced the New York State Senate today passed a bill (S.4632) that would amend the state’s death penalty law to fix a provision that was ruled invalid by the state Court of Appeals.

"To our dismay, the New York State Court of Appeals decided that portions of our capital punishment statute need even more protections for defendants," said Senator Larkin. "We in the State Senate disagree. And so do the majority of New Yorkers.

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today joined Assemblyman Darryl C. Towns (D-Brooklyn) and Illinois Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn (D-Chicago) to announce the drive for the creation of the Military Family Relief Fund in New York State.

Senator Larkin, Assemblyman Towns, and Lt. Governor Quinn are advancing legislation (S.444) which would amend New York’s personal income tax forms to include a check-off box for individuals and corporations to support the New York Military Family Relief Fund.

24-hour Helpline For Alzheimer's

In an effort to better serve individuals, families and professionals in Orange and Ulster Counties, the Alzheimer’s Association of the Hudson Valley Chapter has expanded its helpline to provide telephone assistance 24 hours a day, every day, including weekends and holidays.

The 24-Hour Helpline provides information and referrals and gives family members and caregivers the opportunity to talk with a staff member or trained volunteer.

Larkin Announces Disaster Recovery Funds For Summer Storms

Larkin Bill To Help Localities Collect Delinquent Taxes Passes Senate

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today announced that legislation (S.854) he sponsored to give local governments the option to collect delinquent tax liens on property by selling those liens to private entities has passed the Senate.

"Current law already allows municipalities to sell delinquent tax liens in bulk to the state sponsored Municipal Bond Bank Agency," explained Senator Larkin. "This bill would merely expand the number of organizations that can purchase and then collect those liens.

Larkin Reminds Seniors To Apply For Enhanced Star By Deadline: March 1, 2005

This week, Senator Bill Larkin reminds seniors age 65 and older that the deadline to file for the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption is March 1, 2005.

The Enhanced STAR Program is for seniors who own their homes, who are already age 65 or older, or who will be turning 65 any time this year.

Previously, senior citizens had to reapply for STAR through their local assessor every year to verify their eligibility. Unfortunately, if someone forgot to reapply, they lost the STAR benefit.

Larkin Supports Enactment Of Contingency Budget

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced that by a vote of 38 to 20, with the twenty opposing votes coming from the Senate Democratic Minority, the Senate has passed a contingency budget plan today that is the cornerstone of its budget reform plan and aims to permanently secure new budgets by the April 1st deadline.

"This plan to implement a contingency budget in case there is no agreement between the Governor, Senate, and Assembly on a state budget by April 1st makes good fiscal and common sense," said Senator Larkin.

Larkin Secures $81,000 Grant For O.c. Sheriff's Office

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) has secured a grant in the amount of $81,000 for the Narcotics Investigation Unit of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Goshen. The funding was awarded under the Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance Program.

"I am pleased to have been a part of the effort to secure this grant for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office," said Senator Larkin. "These funds will serve a very specific purpose in the fight to keep our streets safer.

Larkin Announces 2005 Correction Officer Exam

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today announced a new examination for the position of Correction Officer with the New York State Department of Correctional Services will be held on March 19, 2005.

Applications must be sent no later than January 31, 2005.

Once accepted, candidates would be required to complete a 12-month training program through the Correctional Services Training Academy.

A trainee’s starting salary is currently $28,444 per year, which increases after six months to $30,043.
