The press conference, titled "Faces of the Unemployed," was held Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 in front of the New York State Department of Labor One-Stop Center in Long Island City, Queens.

The event was to draw attention to inadequate unemployment benefits in New York and the need to bring the State's Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund back to solvency.

Senator Onorato was joined by unemployed New Yorkers from a variety of occupations, labor unions, other senators, and representatives of the National Employment Law Project, the Fiscal Policy Institute, and other organizations.

Senator Onorato is the lead sponsor of Senate legislation (S.2245) that would gradually increase maximum weekly unemployment benefits - which are significantly lower than those in neighboring states - and begin the process of bringing New York's Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund back from bankruptcy.
