Jazz Cultural Theatre (1982-87) Unique in that in addition to being a prominent jazz club, it was also very much a school of jazz offering 14 different classes. This space on Eighth Avenue above 28 Street was run by NEA Jazz Master Barry Harris, who along with several colleagues, taught music to hundreds of students. Bands, vocalists, vocal ensembles and tap dancers populated the Friday and Saturday night entertainment roster.

The Lost Jazz Shrines series is dedicated to bringing legendary NYC jazz clubs south of 14th street back into the consciousness of the world with a thorough remembrance and celebration.  This year, the series celebrates Ali’s Alley, Jazz Cultural Theatre and Studio Rivbea.  The series will encompass three concerts (Fridays, May 7, May 14 and May 21), each of them preceded by a FREE Humanities Program with live interviews and films that showcase some of the celebrated figures associated with this year’s honorees.
