The Senate is holding a news conference on Brittany's Law (S3645B). The bill, if passed, would establish a statewide violent felony offender registry, requiring offenders to register with the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services upon release or parole from prison or other facility. Brittany's Law is named for 12 year-old Brittany Passalacqua who, along with her mother Helen Buchel, was murdered in Geneva, NY in 2009 by a convicted felon who had been released early from prison. The registry would be similar to the New York State Sex Offender Registry.
