Senator Kennedy to Hold Senior Safety Initiative in Buffalo

Delavan Grider Community Center on Buffalo’s East Side will be site for February 7 program designed to help protect seniors from violence, fraud and abuse

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senator Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo, will hold a program designed to keep seniors safe Thursday, February 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the Delavan Grider Community Center, 877 E. Delavan Ave., Buffalo. Senator Kennedy’s Senior Safety Initiative brings together officials from law enforcement and public safety to discuss ways for seniors to protect themselves from fraud, deceptive schemes, elder abuse and other potential dangers. The presentation will also highlight efforts to keep neighborhoods safe.

At the Senior Safety Initiative event Thursday, senior citizens will benefit from the crime-prevention expertise of the Office of Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and the Buffalo Police Department E-District Community Officers.

“We are absolutely committed to helping seniors stay safe and independent in the homes and neighborhoods where they’ve always lived,” said Senator Kennedy. “Attorney General Schneiderman and the Buffalo Police share this commitment. Together, we have made protecting seniors’ safety a top priority. Our Senior Safety Initiative will help empower senior citizens with the information and know-how they need to protect themselves from fraud and abuse. We hope seniors living on Buffalo’s East Side and throughout Western New York will join us Thursday for this event.”

As a licensed occupational therapist who has served individuals of all ages, Senator Kennedy has long been focused on improving seniors’ health and safety. He will lay out various legislative initiatives, which he has been pushing to protect seniors and their financial assets.

Committed to protecting seniors from fraud and abuse, Attorney General Schneiderman has dispatched a member of his team to inform East Side seniors of their rights under state law and present steps to take to protect their health and finances. The discussion will cover topics like elder abuse, identity theft, internet scams, asset protection and more.

As a police force focused on protecting and improving seniors’ safety, a community police officer from Buffalo Police Department’s E-District will highlight ways for seniors to remain safe in their neighborhoods. They will discuss efforts to help senior citizens, especially during times of distress or danger. 

The event is free and open to the public. All residents are encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
