Subdivision (c) of section 1129 of the vehicle and traffic law is amended to read as follows: (c) Motor vehicles being driven upon any roadway outside of a business or residence district in a caravan or motorcade whether or not towing other vehicles shall be so operated as to allow sufficient space between each such vehicle or combination of vehicles so as to enable any other vehicle to enter and occupy such space without danger. This provision shall not apply to funeral processions. NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF THIS SECTION, A DRIVER OF A MOTOR VEHICLE SHALL NOT FORCE- FULLY OR OTHERWISE ENTER THE SPACE BETWEEN VEHICLES IN A FUNERAL PROC- ESSION SO AS TO DISRUPT THE ORDERLY PROGRESSION AND MOVEMENT OF SAID PROCESSION. A VIOLATION OF THIS SUBDIVISION SHALL BE A TRAFFIC INFRAC- TION. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately. BILL NUMBER:A1530A TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the safety of funeral processions PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: Prohibits disruption of a funeral proc- ession by making it illegal for a driver of a motor vehicle to force his/her way into the line of said procession SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: This legislation amends subdivision(c) of section 1124 of the vehicle and traffic law. This legislation would make it illegal for a driver of a motor vehicle to forcefully enter the space between vehicles in a funeral procession. A violation of this subdivision shall be a traffic infraction. JUSTIFICATION: Not all citizens of this state have the honor of being assigned a police escort during a funeral procession. This bill would help maintain the dignity and respect that is due to all deceased citi- zens of New York State and help protect the safety of those involved in a funeral procession. BILL NUMBER:A1530B TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the safety of funeral processions PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: Prohibits disruption of a funeral procession by making it illegal for a driver of a motor vehicle to unreasonably interfere with the orderly progression of the funeral procession. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: This legislation amends Article 33 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law by adding a new section 1223-B. This legislation would make it illegal for a driver of a motor vehicle to enter the space of two vehicles traveling single file in a funeral procession in a way that unreasonably interferes with the procession. JUSTIFICATION: Not all citizens of this state have the honor of being assigned a police escort during a funeral procession. This bill would help maintain the dignity and respect that is due to all-deceased citizens of New York state and help protect the safety of those involved in a funeral procession.
