BILL NUMBER: S7198 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Harriet Tubman Memorial Highway" PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : This bill would designate State Route 34 from Tioga County to Oswego County as the Harriet Tubman Memorial Highway. This includes the portion that goes through the City of Auburn and by the home of Harriet Tubman. JUSTIFICATION : There is no doubt that Harriet Tubman was one of our greatest freedom fighters, abolitionists and humanitarians helping dozens and dozens of fellow slaves find freedom through the Underground Railroad. More than that, in later years she became a dedicated and outspoken advocate for women's rights and suffrage and the plight of all underprivileged people. Now it seems only fitting that State Route 34 which runs south-to-north, spanning a large part of Upstate New York and runs right by her home in the City of Auburn be named in honor of this great heroine, humanitarian and freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman.
