BILL NUMBER:S2153 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway" PURPOSE: This bill will honor the bravery and sacrifices of those Veterans who defended the freedom of South Korean citizens between June 25, 1950 and July 27, 1953. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: This bill will designate the portion of Route 7 transecting the City of Troy as the "Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway." EXISTING LAW: None. JUSTIFICATION: In defending South Korea from the communist aggression of North Korea, 36,940 American soldiers gave their lives, 92,134 troops suffered wounds, and 8,176 military personnel went missing in action. To honor these brave men and women, and all members of the armed forces that served during the Korean War, the Korean War Veterans Association sought the assistance of the New York State Senate and Assembly.

McDONALD -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 342-vv to read as follows: S 342-VV. PORTION OF STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "KOREAN WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". ALL THAT PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM CONSTITUTING ROUTE SEVEN FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH RIVER STREET IN THE CITY OF TROY IN RENSSELAER COUNTY, AND CONTINUING EASTERLY ALONG ROUTE SEVEN TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH MOUNT PLEASANT AVENUE IN THE CITY OF TROY IN RENSSELAER COUNTY SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "KOREAN WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act; provided that, to avoid any confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the designation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
