AN ACT to amend the education law, in  relation  to  media  literacy  in
  schools

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 805 to
read as follows:
  S 805. MEDIA LITERACY. THE  DEPARTMENT  SHALL  DEVELOP  STANDARDS  AND
OBJECTIVES  FOR  MEDIA  LITERACY FOR GRADES KINDERGARTEN THROUGH TWELVE,
INCLUSIVE, WITHIN THE EXISTING CURRICULUM.  THE  DEPARTMENT  SHALL  MAKE
AVAILABLE  TO  SCHOOL  DISTRICTS  A  LIST  OF  RESOURCES  TO  AID IN THE
SELECTION OF MATERIALS AND RESOURCES THAT CONTAIN SUBSTANTIVE PROVISIONS
ON MEDIA LITERACY, AND WILL ENSURE THAT APPROVED MEDIA LITERACY TRAINING
OPPORTUNITIES ARE MADE AVAILABLE FOR PROFESSIONAL  DEVELOPMENT  PROGRAMS
FOR TEACHERS IN THE STATE.
  S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
