GUNTHER, ZEBROWSKI, GOTTFRIED -- read once and referred to the Committee on Governmental Employees AN ACT to require the director of the classification and compensation division of the civil service department to establish various classi- fications for nurse practitioners THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The director of the classification and compensation divi- sion of the civil service department shall classify various positions for nurse practitioners, as licensed by section 6910 of the education law, and shall allocate appropriate salary grades for such positions according to the board certification, job duties, education and experi- ence levels of such nurse practitioners. § 2. CROUCH -- read once and referred to the Committee on Governmental Employees -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said commit- tee AN ACT directing the president of the civil service commission to study and publish a report on nurse practitioners THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. It is the policy of this state to pursue equitable compen- sation for similar titles/duties within the state workforce and provide for opportunities for career advancement. Compensation should be based not only on educational requirements, but also on the actual duties, experience and advanced educational certification. The job title of nurse practitioner is overdue for a thorough review by the civil service commission. § 2. The president of the state civil service commission is hereby directed to study and publish a report on the job title of nurse practi- tioner. The study and report shall include, but not be limited to: (a) the current job description of nurse practitioner and any changes that should be made to more accurately reflect the actual duties; (b) determination if the current grade 24 adequately reflects the actual complexity of responsibilities and duties; (c) the identification of a career ladder to be utilized in line with other professionals such as registered nurses, social workers, rehabili- tation counselors, dentists and doctors; and (d) recognition of board certification as part of the career ladder. § 3. The president of the civil service commission shall determine if there is a need to make changes to the nurse practitioner title based on the information in the report.
