BILL NUMBER: S6124 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend chapter 225 of the laws of 2015 relating to the management and conservation of horseshoe crabs, in relation to extending the provision of such chapter for two years PURPOSE : To extend for 2 years the requirement that the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) consider certain conservation criteria when managing horseshoe crabs. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : This bill extend the provisions of chapter 225 of the laws of 2015. JUSTIFICATION : In 2015, the DEC, through its management duties, was required to consider certain aspects of the conditions surrounding horseshoe crabs that may affect their survival. The intent of that act is to help this ancient species thrive and in so doing remain a critical link in the ecosystem that insures the survival of some migratory birds, a bait source for whelk and American eel and a source for a clotting agent Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate (LAL)

Section 2 of chapter 225 of the laws of 2015 relating to the management and conservation of horseshoe crabs, is amended to read as follows: § 2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall expire and be deemed repealed December 31, [2017] 2019. § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
