BILL NUMBER: S5418 SPONSOR: HARCKHAM TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend chapter 668 of the laws of 1977, amending the volunteer firefighters' benefit law, relating to disability due to disease or malfunction of the heart or coronary arteries, in relation to making such provisions permanent PURPOSE: The purpose of this legislation is to make permanent the long-standing law governing disability determinations for volunteer firefighters due to disease or malfunction of the heart or coronary arteries. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 removes the sunset clause in the Volunteer Firefighter Benefit Law that governs disability resulting from coronary artery disease. Section 2 sets the effective date.

HARCKHAM -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Local Government AN ACT to amend chapter 668 of the laws of 1977, amending the volunteer firefighters' benefit law, relating to disability due to disease or malfunction of the heart or coronary arteries, in relation to making such provisions permanent THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Sections 4 and 5 of chapter 668 of the laws of 1977, amend- ing the volunteer firefighters' benefit law, relating to disability due to disease or malfunction of the heart or coronary arteries, section 4 as amended by chapter 26 of the laws of 2015, are amended to read as follows: § 4. [The provisions of section two of this act shall remain in full force and effect to and including the thirtieth day of June, 2020. § 5.] This act shall take effect on the first day of July next succeeding the date on which it shall have become a law, or if signed after the first day of July, nineteen hundred seventy-seven, shall take effect immediately, and shall apply only in cases where the injury caus- ing death or disability occurred on or after such date of taking effect. § 2. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD00696-01-9
