TITLE OF BILL:

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
the state highway system as the "Firefighter Tim Gunther Memorial High-
way"

 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:

To honor the life and service of fallen firefighter, Tim Gunther, by
designating a portion of Route, 55 in Poughkeepsie in his memory.

 
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:

Section 1: Amends the highway law to designate the portion of Route 55
in the city of Poughkeepsie as "Firefighter Tim Gunther Memorial High-
way."

Section 2: Provides that the Commissioner of Transportation shall

provide for the installation and maintenance of the ceremonial signage.

Section 3: Provides the effective date.

 
JUSTIFICATION:

This legislation comes at the request of the City of Poughkeepsie, and
would honor Tim Gunther, a 21-year veteran of the City of Poughkeepsie
Fire Department. Tragically, on May 4, 2015 Firefighter Gunther made the
ultimate sacrifice when he died of cardiac-related issues after coura-
geously battling a fatal fire at a home on Poughkeepsie's Church Street.

In addition to his career as a celebrated member of the City of Pough-
keepsie Fire Department, Gunther, a lifelong resident of the Hudson
Valley, remained actively involved in the local community throughout his
life. Gunther was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, both
in and out of the department that celebrated his dedication, heroism and
compassion. In 2015, Gunther was posthumously awarded the states highest
honor for his service, the Liberty Medal.

Designating a portion of Route 55 in his memory is one way the community
will be able to ensure that his legacy lives on and continues to inspire
both residents and visitors alike.

 AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
   the state highway system as  the  "Firefighter  Tim  Gunther  Memorial
   Highway"
 
   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

   Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-1 to
 read as follows:
   § 344-1. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED  AS  THE
 "FIREFIGHTER  TIM  GUNTHER  MEMORIAL  HIGHWAY".  ALL THAT PORTION OF THE
 STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM CONSTITUTING STATE ROUTE FIFTY-FIVE IN THE CITY  OF
 POUGHKEEPSIE,  COUNTY  OF DUTCHESS, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE
 "FIREFIGHTER TIM GUNTHER MEMORIAL HIGHWAY".
   § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the  instal-
 lation  and  maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system
 as designated pursuant to section one of this  act.  However,  to  avoid
 confusion  and  to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig-
 nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall  be  one  of
 ceremonial  nature  and  the  official name of such highway shall not be
 changed as a result of this act.
   § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
