HONORING Deputy Emily Zielewicz in recognition of
her prompt and heroic actions in saving the life of
a New York State Trooper who was shot during an
incident in the Town of Colesville, New York, on
June 9, 2021
WHEREAS, The quality and sanctity of community life are cherished
values, worthy of safeguarding, and this Legislative Body is moved to
honor those individuals who serve to preserve and protect such values,
lauding particularly their unwavering courage and dedication in the
daily performance of their duties; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of those exemplary police officers who
take prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations, and in doing
so, help others to avert life-threatening danger; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Deputy Emily Zielewicz in recognition of her prompt and heroic actions
in saving the life of a New York State Trooper who was shot during an
incident in the Town of Colesville, New York; and
WHEREAS, On June 9, 2021, Emily Zielewicz, a Deputy with the Broome
County Sheriff's Office, responded to a call in the Town of Colesville
for a suspicious incident with a male drawing things in the roadway with
chalk; and
WHEREAS, Upon arrival, the male fled the area and eventually armed
himself with a rifle; Deputy Emily Zielewicz, along with other law
enforcement units from the Sheriff's office and the New York State
Police, established a perimeter to contain the suspicious male pending
further investigation; and
WHEREAS, The male fired his rifle multiple times in an unknown
direction during the incident; he then fired a rifle round, striking
Trooper Becky Seager, who was further south from Deputy Emily
Zielewicz's location; and
WHEREAS, Upon hearing Trooper Seager on the radio advising she had
been shot in the hip, Deputy Emily Zielewicz, without hesitation, drove
her patrol car to Trooper Seager's location; and
WHEREAS, Arriving mere minutes after the shooting, Deputy Emily
Zielewicz quickly approached Trooper Seager and assessed her condition;
she began first aid procedures by applying a tourniquet to her left leg
while calling out details on the suspect who fled south along the river;
and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Shafer and other Troopers responded thereafter and
together they loaded Trooper Seager into Deputy Emily Zielewicz's patrol
car for immediate evacuation to a hospital; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Emily Zielewicz, while extricating Trooper Seager,
took fire from the suspect; she relayed the suspects location to other
law enforcement personnel in the area and continued to coordinate with
dispatchers on a rendezvous point to meet an ambulance; she continued to
provide first aid to Trooper Seager and reassurance that assistance was
on its way; and
WHEREAS, Upon arrival of EMS, Trooper Seager was placed in an
ambulance and Deputy Emily Zielewicz immediately returned to the scene
to assist other law enforcement units who were actively engaged in
gunfire exchange with the suspect; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Emily Zielewicz disregarded her own safety when she
immediately went to the aid of Trooper Seager, despite the shooter still
being at large in the immediate area; and
WHEREAS, This brave public servant's heroism is beyond reproach and
the survival of Trooper Seager can be attributed to her actions; and
WHEREAS, Through her heroic actions, Deputy Emily Zielewicz
demonstrated her character and compassion for the welfare of others,
personifying the collective concern of public servants across the
community of the State of New York who respond when others are in need
of help; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
extraordinary individuals who unselfishly devote their lives to the
preservation of order and the protection of others are worthy and due
full praise for their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Deputy Emily Zielewicz in recognition of her prompt and heroic
actions on June 9, 2021, noting the significance of her selfless
contributions which are in keeping with the highest traditions of the
Broome County Sheriff's Office; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Deputy Emily Zielewicz, Broome County Sheriff's Office.
