COMMEMORATING the 125th Anniversary of the Dennis
P. McHugh Piermont Public Library

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across the great
State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary organizations whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its
citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont
Public Library to be celebrated on Sunday, September 12, 2021; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of this momentous occasion, the Piermont
Public Library is inviting village residents to have a voice in how
Piermont is remembered by providing online "Oral History Chaperones" to
schedule and conduct recording sessions for its project, Piermont
Remembers; and

WHEREAS, On September 23, 1896, The Free Library of the Piermont
Improvement Association registered with the University of the State of
New York; the certificate is signed by Melvil Dewey, then Secretary of
the Public Library Department in Albany, New York, who is well-known for
inventing the Dewey Decimal Classification for libraries; and

WHEREAS, Throughout its distinguished 125-year history, the Piermont
Public Library has remained true to its mission to assemble, preserve
and administer books and related educational and recreational material;
to enlighten citizenship and to enrich personal lives; to serve the
community as a center of reliable information; to provide a place where
inquiring minds may encounter the original, sometimes unorthodox or
critical thought so necessary to a society that depends on the free
competition of ideas; and to identify community needs and to provide
programs of service to meet such needs; and

WHEREAS, A vital part of its community, this remarkable institution
has continually strived to respond to the changing needs of its diverse
communities, truly providing outstanding service to the entire
population of neighborhood residents; and

WHEREAS, The success enjoyed by the Piermont Public Library is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its librarians and staff, whose
involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive
commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of
excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the
community it serves; and

WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Piermont
Public Library may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as it looks
forward to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and
intellectual needs of the community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont
Public Library; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library.
