COMMENDING the humanitarian contributions of the
Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. to Queens, New York, upon the
occasion of celebrating its 70th Anniversary, June
4, 2021

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations within the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the humanitarian contributions of the Queens Alumnae Chapter of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. upon the occasion of its 70th
Anniversary, on Friday, June 4, 2021; and

WHEREAS, This year, the Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. (DST) is celebrating seven decades of impacting the
community through committed and dedicated service; and

WHEREAS, The 70th Anniversary Celebration began with the unveiling
of "On Their Shoulders," a commemorative limited-edition giclee canvas
print by world renowned artist Leroy Campbell; this beautiful piece
highlights African American women who not only bask in the art of
literacy, but captures the wisdom of learning about women whose
shoulders we humbly stand upon fused throughout this brilliant work; and

WHEREAS, This celebration will be a year-long collaboration of
activities recognizing Queens Alumnae's influence on the community; 70
glorious years later, a virtual 70s themed extravaganza is planned for
Friday, June 4, 2021, to mark this momentous occasion as we, "Remember
the Past, Reflect on the Present and Focus on the Future"; and

WHEREAS, Established on June 4, 1951, the illustrious history of
Queens Alumnae was chartered and began with the vision of 11
distinguished women, including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. founder
Ethel Cuff Black; and

WHEREAS, The Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc. fosters sisterhood among its local membership, while providing
extraordinary work in enhancing and providing community service,
scholarships and empowerment to communities and residents throughout
Queens; and

WHEREAS, Working with community leaders, educators, and social
activists to impact lives and transform their global and diverse
community, this vital organization has awarded countless scholarships to
deserving students; and

WHEREAS, The Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc. sponsors pivotal programs in the Queens community such as: Teen
Lift Annual Tours of Historically Black Colleges and Universities;

Social Action Program regarding voter registration; project Cherish's
restoration of the House of Lewis H. Latimer, an African-American
inventor; adoption of the New Horizon School for students with special
needs in Accra, Ghana; and the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Inc. consists of a membership body of highly altruistic
and educated individuals committed to social well-being; the chapter is
composed of over 200 individuals with diverse educational and
professional backgrounds and 75 percent are recipients of graduate
degrees; and

WHEREAS, As the chapter reflects on the past 70 years of profound
civic and humanitarian aims, they remain unyielding in their commitment
to a future of even greater impact and accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, The success of the Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Inc. is in direct correlation to the efforts of its
members, whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an
impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising
standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the sorority and
the population it serves; and

WHEREAS, In light of its commitment, dedication, and successful
efforts, it is the practice of this Legislative Body to extend its
highest commendation to the Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc.; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
upon the occasion of celebrating its 70th Anniversary on June 4, 2021;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc.
