Assembly Resolution No. 275

CONGRATULATING the members of the
Sherburne-Earlville Central School District Division
3 Odyssey of the Mind Team upon the occasion of
winning first place in New York State for their
outstanding solution to Problem 1
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord
with its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and
leaders of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best exemplify the
ideals and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate the
members of the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District Division 3
Odyssey of the Mind Team upon the occasion of winning first place in New
York State for their outstanding solution to Problem 1; and
WHEREAS, Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program
in which students from kindergarten through college learn how to think
divergently by working as a team to solve an open-ended problem; and
WHEREAS, As part of the Odyssey of the Mind program, students also
learn creativity, innovation, problem-solving, critical thinking, global
awareness, interpersonal and collaborative communication skills,
self-directions and adaptability; and
WHEREAS, Problem 1 was titled: OMer the ROMER, for Divisions I, II,
III & IV; OMers are always looking for new fun, and funny, experiences;
teams were asked to design and build a ride-on vehicle that would take
an OMer character on an adventure in search of humor; the vehicle used
stored energy as it was propelled forward and in reverse; at each stop,
the vehicle and the OMer were asked to react to something humorous
before traveling to the next destination; the humorous performance also
included an unplanned stop where the OMer character took a selfie, a
creative physical representation of the selfie, and a vehicle-produced
special effect; and
WHEREAS, In addition to winning first place for their exceptional
solution to Problem 1, this talented team received its fourth Ranatra
Fusca Award, which is presented to teams or individuals who exhibit
exceptional creativity, either through some aspect of their problem
solution, or an extraordinary idea beyond the problem solution; and
WHEREAS, The Team will now travel to Orlando, Florida, in June of
2021, as representatives of Sherburne-Earlville Central School District
and the State of New York to take part in the World Finals; and
WHEREAS, Coach Heidi Johnson has done a superb job in guiding,
molding and inspiring the team members toward their goals; and
WHEREAS, The triumphant Sherburne-Earlville Central School District
Division 3 Odyssey of the Mind Team members are: Jenny Adsit, Lillie
Ashton, Maleah Britton, Anna Fern, Lily French, Justiss Kovack and Peter
Peschel; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose,
these scholars now stand honorably, with just pride in their
accomplishments and in eager anticipation of future challenges,
understanding and appreciating the caring counsel and support provided
by their coach, teachers, family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Educational competition instills the values of teamwork and
accomplishment, and these outstanding students have clearly made a
contribution to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their
school; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the members of the Sherburne-Earlville Central School
District Division 3 Odyssey of the Mind Team upon the occasion of
winning first place in New York State for their outstanding solution to
Problem 1; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the members of the Sherburne-Earlville Central School
District Division 3 Odyssey of the Mind Team and Coach Heidi Johnson.
