TITLE OF BILL:

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
the state highway system as the "Ralph Calabrese Highway"

 
PURPOSE:

This bill designates a portion of the state highway system in the town
of Hopewell, city and town of Canandaigua, county of Ontario, as the
"Ralph Calabrese Highway".

 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section 1 amends the highway law by adding a new section 344-n designat-
ing the portion of the highway system constituting Route 21 (E.Gibson
Street), starting at Route 332 (North Main Street), traveling in a
northeasterly direction approximately 3.3 miles to Route 488 in the
hamlet of Chapin, town of Hopewell, town of Canandaigua, city of Canan-
daigua, county of Ontario, shall be designated and known as the "Ralph

Calabrese Highway".

Section 2 is the effective date.

 
JUSTIFICATION:

Ralph Anthony Calabrese, 93, passed away December 5, 2021, at the VA
Medical Center in Canandaigua. Ralph was born in Geneva, NY married and
had three sons. Ralph enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two years in
the Korean War receiving a number of decorations, including the Bronze
Star, Korean Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Cpl. Calabrese remained deeply committed to veterans and community. He
fought hard to keep the Canandaigua VA Medical Center open when the
Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) recommended closing it in the
1990's. His effort kept the VA opened and to this day it is improving
care for his fellow veterans.

This legislation will designate various segments of Route 21, Route 332
and Route 488 in certain municipalities in the county of Ontario as the
"Ralph Calabrese Highway". This portion of highway will forever be asso-
ciated with Ralph Anthony Calabrese and the contributions he left to the
region, so it is only appropriate that the State recognize his consider-
able contributions by naming that stretch of highway in his honor.

   THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-

   §  344-N.  PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE
 "RALPH CALABRESE HIGHWAY".   ALL THAT  PORTION  OF  THE  HIGHWAY  SYSTEM
 CONSTITUTING  ROUTE  21 (E. GIBSON STREET), STARTING AT ROUTE 332 (NORTH
 MAIN STREET), TRAVELING IN A NORTHEASTERLY DIRECTION, APPROXIMATELY  3.3
 MILES, TO ROUTE 488 IN THE HAMLET OF CHAPIN, TOWN OF HOPEWELL, COUNTY OF
 ONTARIO, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "RALPH CALABRESE HIGHWAY".
   §  2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal-
 lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state  highway  system
 as  designated  pursuant  to  section one of this act. However, to avoid
 confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce,  the  desig-
 nation  called  for  pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of
 ceremonial nature and the official name of such  highway  shall  not  be
 changed as a result of this act.
