LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Rebecca Maxfield upon the occasion of
winning the Ninth Judicial District Committee Women's History Essay
Contest

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor the youth of
today, and leaders of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best
exemplify the ideals and values cherished by this great State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Rebecca Maxfield upon the occasion of winning the Ninth Judicial
District Committee Women's History Essay Contest to be recognized at a
breakfast on Friday, April 24, 2009; and
WHEREAS, The Ninth Judicial District Committee to Promote Gender Fair-
ness in the Courts sponsored an essay contest in honor of Women's Histo-
ry Month; Rebecca Maxfield, a twelfth grader at New Rochelle High
School, won first place in the contest's junior/senior category; and
WHEREAS, Rebecca Maxfield is an extraordinary student who is passion-
ate about politics; for her essay, she spent hours researching political
and feminists blogs in the months leading up to and after the elections
of November 2008; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of her many academic accomplishments, Rebecca
Maxfield has been named National Merit Finalist and an AP Scholar with
Distinction; she has also received an award for Outstanding Student of
the Italian Language from the Westchester County Board of Legislators;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, Rebecca Maxfield is active in several extracur-
ricular activities; she is currently serving her second year as Captain
of her school's Academic Challenge team; under her leadership, the team
has placed third in the national championship, won three local tourna-
ments, including the largest one with over fifty teams, and reached the
regional semifinal of the Cablevision game show "The Challenge"; and
WHEREAS, A talented singer, Rebecca Maxfield qualified for All-State
Conference Women's Choir last year and Area All-State the year before;
additionally, last year, she won the New York Citywide Competition of
the National Vocabulary Championship and tied for fourth place in the
national final of the same; and
WHEREAS, A young woman of singular distinction, Rebecca Maxfield has
distinguished herself as a student of superlative ability, establishing
a high standard of academic excellence and purposefulness of life rarely
achieved in youthful years; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to call attention to
those young people within our midst whose extraordinary accomplishments
bring pride to their families, their communities, and to the State of
New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Rebecca Maxfield upon the occasion of winning the Ninth Judicial
District Committee Women's History Essay Contest, and to wish her
continued success in all her future endeavors; and be if further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Rebecca Maxfield.
