LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Roberto Malatesta upon the occasion of
receiving the Police Chief's Association of Ulster County's Meritorious
Citizenship - Heroism Award on May 8, 2009

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of those exemplary citizens who take
prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations while in the
course of their job duties, helping others to avert life-threatening
danger; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Roberto Malatesta upon the occasion of receiving the Police Chief's
Association of Ulster County's Meritorious Citizenship - Heroism Award
at its Law Enforcement Awards Banquet to be held at the Hillside Manor
in Kingston, New York, on Friday, May 8, 2009; and
WHEREAS, On November 4, 2008, Ulster County Sheriff's Deputy Jason
Bruck became embroiled in a life threatening physical altercation with
an intoxicated subject following a traffic stop on Route 208 in the Town
of Shawangunk; and
WHEREAS, As three males and one female from a nearby residence inter-
jected themselves on the side of the vehicle operator and approached
Deputy Jason Bruck during the traffic stop, the male operator attacked
the deputy, forcing him to the ground, fighting for his life; and
WHEREAS, While this was going on, Roberto Malatesta, a local business-
man and volunteer fireman in the Town of Shawangunk who had heard the
call for assistance on his scanner, stepped in to help Deputy Jason
Bruck; and
WHEREAS, When Deputy Jason Bruck went to the ground with the vehicle
operator, one of the three males attempted to assault the peace officer;
despite great personal risk to himself, Roberto Malatesta stepped in and
physically prevented the second subject or any of the others from join-
ing in the fight; and
WHEREAS, As a result of Roberto Malatesta jumping in and preventing a
grossly uneven situation, Deputy Jason Bruck was able to subdue the
first subject and take him into custody; and
WHEREAS, Through his spontaneous and heroic actions, Roberto Malatesta
demonstrated his character and compassion for the welfare of others,
personifying the collective concern of ordinary citizens across the
community of the State of New York who respond when others are in need
of help; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Roberto Malatesta upon the occasion of receiving the Police
Chief's Association of Ulster County's Meritorious Citizenship - Heroism
Award on May 8, 2009; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Roberto Malatesta.
