LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Shoshana Singer upon the occasion of
her designation for special recognition at the 43rd Annual Dinner Dance
of the United Progressive Club on May 7, 2009

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend individuals who distinguish themselves in their profession and
in service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend
Shoshana Singer, Principal of P.S. 177, upon the occasion of her desig-
nation for special recognition at the 43rd Annual Dinner Dance of the
United Progressive Club, to be held at The Rex Manor in Brooklyn, New
York, on Thursday, May 7, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Shoshana Singer believes children come first; her strong
background in Special Education has enhanced her sensitivity to the
needs of each student, and, a strong, supportive leader, she maintains
an open door policy for teachers, parents, and students alike; and
WHEREAS, Shoshana Singer began her public school teaching career in
District 20 in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn; as a reading
specialist, she provided remediation to students mandated to receive
resource room services; her expertise in implementing Individual Educa-
tional Plans led her to become a district wide Staff Developer modeling
instructional strategies; and
WHEREAS, Her illustrious career continued as an Instructional Support
Specialist and subsequently, as Interim Acting Principal in Region 7
where she implemented innovative instructional programs, designed effec-
tive professional development activities, implemented curriculum
mandates, and supervised and supported teachers; and
WHEREAS, When her career shifted to District 21, in her role as
Assistant Principal at P.S. 177, she implemented Enrichment and Academic
Intervention Programs, initiated instructional collaboration in the
Teachers College Reading and Writing Program, and coordinated and moni-
tored State and City Wide standardized testing; and
WHEREAS, Currently the Principal of P.S. 177, in addition to her many
administrative duties, she always finds time to visit classrooms,
address teachers' concerns, and get acquainted with all the children;
she has fostered a positive atmosphere of collaboration between staff
and parents, and her fluency in several languages helps her communicate
with parents; she has elevated the level of parental involvement and
created a partnership where decision making is shared in the best inter-
ests of the children contributing, along with the lasting ties P.S. 177
has forged under her leadership with many community and governmental
organizations, to the recognition of the school as a model of excellence
in New York City; and
WHEREAS, With Shoshana Singer throughout have been her husband Micha-
el; their children, Lauren and Robert and their spouses, Moshe and
Rachelle; and their six treasured grandchildren, all of whom are proud
to be part of her life and rejoice in her accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Shoshana Singer has distinguished herself in her profession
and in her community and truly merits the recognition of this Legisla-
tive Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Shoshana Singer upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition at the 43rd Annual Dinner Dance of the United Progressive
Club on May 7, 2009; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Shoshana Singer.
