LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Sara Furlong upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the Senior Personnel Placement
Bureau on May 19, 2009

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge those exemplary individuals whose purposeful lives
and distinguished careers have been committed to bettering the quality
of life in this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Sara Furlong upon the occasion of her designation for special recogni-
tion by the Senior Personnel Placement Bureau on Tuesday, May 19, 2009;
and
WHEREAS, Raised in Pelham, New York, Sara Furlong attended nursery
school at the College of New Rochelle's Child Study Center; she contin-
ued her affiliation with The Ursuline's by graduating from The Ursuline
School and then the College of New Rochelle, where she received her BFA
in painting after spending a year at the Universita Internationale in
Florence, Italy; and
WHEREAS, After a career in retailing, Sara Furlong changed directions
and obtained her Master's degree in Recreation and Parks Administration
from Lehmann College; and
WHEREAS, Sara Furlong joined the City of New Rochelle's Department of
Parks and Recreation in 1988, and began working with the seniors at the
Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center, where she continues to be responsible for
recreation activities, as well as Hudson Park and Lincoln Pool; and
WHEREAS, Despite her busy professional life, Sara Furlong has been
called upon to contribute her time and talents to countless civic and
charitable endeavors and has always given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Sara Furlong is very active in martial arts and is the only
woman to have served as President of the North East Martial Arts Council
(NEMAC); today, she serves on the World Goju Black Belt Council; and
WHEREAS, A talented artist, Sara Furlong is the Vice President of the
New Rochelle Artists Association, where she has received numerous awards
for her watercolors; in 2008, her work was selected to be represented in
the NRAA Calendar of New Rochelle artists; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Sara Furlong taught for many years in the New
Rochelle High School of Religion (RELIG), and now teaches ESL at the
Adult Learning Center in New Rochelle; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Sara Furlong has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Sara Furlong has displayed through-
out her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Sara Furlong upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the Senior Personnel Placement Bureau on May 19, 2009;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sara Furlong.
