LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of C. Addison Keeler, Jr.,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is with great sorrow and deep regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of C. Addison Keeler, Jr., of Binghamton, New
York, who died on January 7, 2009, at the age of 78; and
WHEREAS, The son of Charles Addison and Esther Montgomery Keeler, C.
Addison Keeler, Jr. graduated at the top of his class from Binghamton
Central in 1948; he then received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamil-
ton College in 1952, Phi Beta Kappa and an LLB from the Cornell Law
School in 1955, where he graduated first in his class, served on the
Cornell Law Review and received the Order of the Coif; and
WHEREAS, After admission to the Bar of the State of New York in 1955,
C. Addison Keeler, Jr. became an associate with Hinman, Howard and
Kattell; next, he was appointed a confidential law clerk to the Appel-
late Division of the Third Department of the Supreme Court of the State
of New York and then returned to practice at Hinman, Howard and Kattell
and was made a partner in 1962; and
WHEREAS, A member of the Broome County, New York State and American
Bar Associations, C. Addison Keeler, Jr. concentrated his practice in
Health Law, Estates and Trusts, Taxation and Pensions and Employee bene-
fits; he retired from the firm in 1999, after 42 years of dedicated
service; and
WHEREAS, Despite his busy professional life, C. Addison Keeler, Jr.
compiled an impressive record of civic and charitable service, he served
as a director and counsel of Twin Tier Home Health Care; counsel and
director of the Good Shepherd-Fairview Home; director of the Broome
County Nursing Home Board; director of the Broome County Urban League;
director and president of the Broome County Social Planning Council;
director of the Broome County United Way and director of the Broome
County Arts Council; and co-founded the NY-Penn Health Services Agency;
and
WHEREAS, C. Addison Keeler, Jr. was also a member of the Broome County
Chamber of Commerce and its Live Wire Club; for 20 years, he wrote the
scripts for the performances of the Live Wire Players at the annual
Chamber dinner and for performances at the annual Hinman, Howard &
Kattell holiday parties for many years; and
WHEREAS, In addition, C. Addison Keeler, Jr. was a member of the Bing-
hamton Garden Club, the YMCA varsity volleyball team that went to the
national tournament and was both a camper and counselor at the YMCA Camp
Arrowhead; and
WHEREAS, An active member of First Presbyterian Church, C. Addison
Keeler, Jr. served as an elder, a deacon and a Sunday school teacher, as
well as being a member of the choir; and
WHEREAS, C. Addison Keeler, Jr. is survived by his wife of 52 years,
Nancy Bertholf Keeler; daughters, Martha (Thomas) Macinski, Molly Ann
Keeler, and Mary Jane Keeler (Adrian Berridge); sons, James Robert Keel-
er and Charles Benjamin Keeler; grandchild, Sarah (Adam) Sperry; great-
grandchild, Dorothy Sperry; sister, Oppie (James, Jr.) Ludwig; brother,
John M. (Marcella) Keeler; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, all
of whom felt privileged to be a part of his life and rejoiced in his
many achievements; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, C. Addison Keeler, Jr.
leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and
will remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of C. Addison Keeler, Jr., distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of C. Addison Keeler, Jr.
