LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Raymond S. Sant, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Raymond Spafford Sant of Fair Haven, New York, died on
Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at the age of 72; and
WHEREAS, Born in Auburn, New York, to the late Raymond T. and Mabelle
Spafford Sant, Raymond graduated from Cato-Meridian High School in 1954;
he then received his B. A. degree from Cornell University in 1958; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Cornell University, Raymond S. Sant was
commissioned in the United States Army Reserves and served until he was
honorably discharged as a Captain in 1969; and
WHEREAS, In 1962, he received his Juris Doctor degree from Syracuse
University College of Law, and subsequently began his legal career at
the law firm of Michaels, Port and Cuddy; he also joined Judge Peter
Corning in the practice of law in Auburn, as well as opening his own law
office in Cato, which he maintained for 45 years; and
WHEREAS, Raymond S. Sant was admitted to practice before the New York
State Appellate Division Fourth Department in 1963; he then served as
Assistant Cayuga County Attorney from 1964 until 1968, when he was
appointed Cayuga County Attorney, retiring in 1991; and
WHEREAS, Raymond S. Sant distinguished himself in his profession and
by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, The same year he retired, Raymond S. Sant was granted the
honor of practicing law before the Supreme Court of the United States;
and
WHEREAS, Deeply committed to his community, he was the recipient of
the Distinguished Native Son Award, and was appointed as the first Water
Deputy for Cayuga County; furthermore, he served as Trustee of Cayuga
Community College from 2001-2002, and was a member of the Cato Volunteer
Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his parents, Raymond S. Sant is predeceased by
his sister, Jane Sant Brockman; he is survived by his loving companion
of many years, Alice M. House, and her six children, Cheryl, David,
Stefan, Hugh, Jana, and Lesley; as well as his four nephews, Paul (Beth)
Brockman, Ted (Georgette) Brockman, Peter (Robin) Brockman, and Mark
(Gail) Brockman; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Raymond S. Sant leaves
behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will
remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Raymond S. Sant, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Raymond S. Sant.
