LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Peter McGinn, distinguished
citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is with great sorrow and deep regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of Peter McGinn, noting the significance of his
purposeful life and accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, The CEO and President of United Health Services from 2000
until 2007, Peter McGinn died on August 17, 2009, at the age of 61; and
WHEREAS, A New York City area native, Peter McGinn became a consultant
for United Health Services in 1984 and rose through the ranks to become
vice president for human resources, a position he also held for Johns
Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore; he returned to UHS in 1993, and held
several leadership positions before becoming CEO in 2000; and
WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Peter McGinn, United Health Services
launched Cyberknife, which treats tumors through a combination of robot-
ics, radiation and computer imaging; he also created the Campaign for
Excellence, a program which emphasized making every interaction with
co-workers and patients a better experience; and
WHEREAS, One of 10 hospital executives nationwide chosen to discuss
health care challenges with two of then President Bush's top advisors in
2004, Peter McGinn also taught courses at Binghamton University's School
of Management and wrote three books, including LEADING OTHERS, MANAGING
YOURSELF and several articles which appeared in national health maga-
zines; and
WHEREAS, Peter McGinn is survived by his wife, Marilyn, and two daugh-
ters, Katie and Kerry, all of whom felt privileged to be a part of his
life and rejoiced in his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Peter McGinn leaves behind
a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a
comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Peter McGinn, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Peter McGinn.
