LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Rohan Plummer upon the occasion of
his designation for special recognition as a 2009 Student of the Year by
the New York Association for Continuing/Community Education
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those indi-
viduals whose character and achievements best exemplify the ideals and
values cherished by the great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is proud to congratulate
Rohan Plummer upon the occasion of his designation for special recogni-
tion as a 2009 Student of the Year by the New York Association for
Continuing/Community Education; this auspicious occasion will be cele-
brated at NYACCE's 26th Annual Student Awards Dinner on Tuesday, March
3, 2009, to be held at the Century House in Latham, New York; and
WHEREAS, NYACCE represents adult education professionals from across
New York State; a primary mission of NYACCE is to maintain and expand
education and training opportunities for undereducated adults in our
state; and
WHEREAS, NYACCE strives to ensure that the opportunities and success
afforded these students and thousands of others continues to be avail-
able, and that additional adults in need of these services continue to
be served without barriers; it is well understood that individuals who
continue their education have a better chance at achieving better
employment and a superior quality of life; and
WHEREAS, Rohan Plummer was nominated by the Orleans/Niagara BOCES for
a 2009 NYACCE Student of the Year Award; and
WHEREAS, Beginning his education in Jamaica, Rohan Plummer attended
St. Aloysius primary school; during ninth grade he took the ninth grade
achievement test and passed which enabled him to attend high school (St.
Mary's College) in Jamaica; and
WHEREAS, Rohan Plummer was financially unable to complete high school
in Jamaica, but his teachers made him understand the importance of
learning and value the importance of education; and
WHEREAS, The pastor of Rohan Plummer's church helped him find a
program which enabled him to come to the United States and find employ-
ment; he became a permanent U.S. resident and worked to support himself
and his children in Jamaica; and
WHEREAS, Working seasonally for the City of Niagara Falls, Rohan Plum-
mer knew that he needed his GED to obtain better employment; he attended
GED classes religiously before and after work, and during his lunch
break; and
WHEREAS, Continuing to study at home, Rohan Plummer took his GED exam-
ination and passed in June 2008; he was immediately promoted to a better
job at work; and
WHEREAS, While continuing to work full time, Rohan Plummer has applied
to Niagara County Community College to study for his RN degree; and
WHEREAS, There are many remarkable stories in the world of adult
education, but few are as impressive as that of Rohan Plummer who serves
as an inspiration to us all; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Rohan Plummer upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition as a 2009 Student of the Year by the New York Asso-
ciation for Continuing/Community Education; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Rohan Plummer, 1356 Ontario Avenue, Niagara Falls, New York
14305.
