LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Carl Strock upon the occasion of receiv-
ing the Carol S. Knox Award from the Capital Region Chapter of the New
York Civil Liberties Union on November 12, 2009

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Carl
Strock upon the occasion of receiving the Carol S. Knox Award from the
Capital Region Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union at its
Annual Awards Ceremony to be held on Thursday, November 12, 2009, at the
Polish American Community Center, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Capital Region Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties
Union established this most prestigious award to honor the memory of
Carol S. Knox; a longtime social activist and staunch libertarian, Carol
had a deep commitment to constitutional liberties; this award is
bestowed each year to someone whose work reflects Carol's spirit and
commitment to civil liberties; and
WHEREAS, A columnist at the SCHENECTADY GAZETTE, Carl Strock will
receive the Carol S. Knox Award in recognition of his in-depth analysis
of the Aref and Hossain FBI sting case; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Saratoga Springs, New York, Carl Strock
joined the SCHENECTADY GAZETTE in 1981, and began writing his column,
"View from Here," in 1987; throughout his career he has been a consist-
ent champion for those who have suffered great injustices; today, he
continues to write his column for the Gazette three times a week; and
WHEREAS, In the 1960s, Carl Strock worked with the American Friends
Service Committee in Southeast Asia; he went on to become a reporter
covering the developing war in Vietnam from Laos for the Associated
Press; later, he worked in Hong Kong as an editor at the SOUTH CHINA
MORNING POST; he has also worked and lived in Mexico and Peru; and
WHEREAS, He attended Tufts University and received a Bachelor's degree
in Philosophy from the New School for Social Research (now called the
New School University) in New York City; and
WHEREAS, In 2000, Carl Strock was one of the three finalists for the
illustrious Heywood Broun Award, given by the Newspaper Guild to print
journalists who expose injustice; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Pearl, their two
children, as well as their four grandchildren, all of whom feel privi-
leged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, A man of singular distinction, Carl Strock has continually
demonstrated extreme competence, extraordinary intelligence and diligent
leadership in his unwavering service to his community and profession;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, have earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Carl Strock upon the occasion of receiving the Carol S. Knox Award
from the Capital Region Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union on
November 12, 2009; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Carl Strock.
