LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring John H. Shields, Jr. upon the occasion
of his retirement after many years of distinguished service to the
Village of Nyack, New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend individuals who have faithfully served the citizens of their
community and the State of New York with exemplary dedication and
conscientious service, significantly improving the quality of life in
the community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
John H. Shields, Jr. upon the occasion of his retirement as Mayor of the
Village of Nyack, New York; and
WHEREAS, John H. Shields, Jr. has rendered faithful, conscientious and
valuable service to the Village and people of Nyack for 14 years, first
for six years as a member of the Village's Board of Trustees and, for
the past eight years, as Mayor; and
WHEREAS, His time in office has been marked by an outstanding dedi-
cation to social justice and by his commitment to hear every voice and
to serve all the people of the Village; and
WHEREAS, Deeply committed to the quality of life of the citizens of
Nyack and Rockland County, John H. Shields, Jr. is well-known for his
steadfast support of nonprofit organizations in the community, such as
Volunteer Counseling Services of Rockland County, Inc. (VCS Inc.), and
including his service in the role of Grand Marshal of Gay Pride Rock-
land; and
WHEREAS, John H. Shields, Jr. has served the Village of Nyack with
great diligence and unswerving commitment, earning the admiration,
esteem and affection of his colleagues and community, who will gather
for a dinner hosted by VCS Inc. at La Fontana Restaurant in Nyack on
January 26, 2010, to honor him and wish him well; and
WHEREAS, As he completes his service as Mayor of the Village of Nyack,
John H. Shields, Jr. leaves an indelible imprint on the Village, its
services and quality of life, and richly merits the gratitude and appre-
ciation of the citizens of Nyack and the recognition and commendation of
this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor John H. Shields, Jr. upon the occasion of his retirement as Mayor
of the Village of Nyack after many years of distinguished service; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John H. Shields, Jr.
