LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Boy
Scouts of America and BSA Troop 1 of Flushing, New York, to be observed
on February 6, 2010

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those organizations that are devoted to instilling in youth
the values of community service and civic responsibility; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and BSA Troop 1
of Flushing, New York, to be observed on Saturday, February 6, 2010,
with a Father and Son Dinner; and
WHEREAS, In addition, BSA Troop 1 will celebrate its Centennial Anni-
versary Gala at Temple Beth Shalom, on Saturday, May 15, 2010, followed
by a 100th Anniversary Picnic and Family Day at Kolping on the Hudson on
September 18-19, 2010; and
WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is dedicated to the develop-
ment of leadership, values and character in the youth of this Nation;
and
WHEREAS, BSA Troop 1 is the oldest troop in Greater New York Councils
and one of the oldest continuously chartered troops in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated on February 8,
1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916, following the example of the
scouting movement in England, and as an out growth of various groups at
the time, which were run to provide an educational program for boys and
young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of
participating in citizenship, and to develop personal fitness; and
WHEREAS, One of those groups was the "Sons of Daniel Boone" which was
organized and run by the noted illustrator, who lived in Flushing at the
time; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Carter Beard's neighbor and friend was a young minis-
ter named Rollo A. Hamilton, who had a boys club at his Congregational
Church; together, they enthusiastically embraced the Scouting program
and sought to institute it in the United States; Reverend Hamilton
agreed to become the first Scoutmaster of the first Troop in Flushing,
and chartered Troop 1 at the same time as Scouting in America was offi-
cially organized; and
WHEREAS, Many other troops came into being in the following months and
years, in Queens, and eventually all over Queens County; eventually
councils were formed, and numbers were issued based on the councils; and
WHEREAS, BSA Troop 1 is based in Queens County, and Daniel Beard
established that Troop 1 was the first founded in Queens County; while
there have been thousands of troops established since the start of
scouting, there are only about 10 troops that have continued in exist-
ence since 1910; and
WHEREAS, BSA Troop 1 is sponsored by an organization of parents and
other interested adults, often former members of the Troop, which is
called "The Dad's Club of Troop 1, Inc."; this organization was founded
in 1929, and incorporated with New York State in 1931; and
WHEREAS, BSA Troop 1 continues to enjoy many special activities each
year, including those designed for older scouts; they include trips to
the Cabin during Easter Week, hiking in the Catskills for a couple of
days each Easter, and Canoe Trips every June; and
WHEREAS, The focus of BSA Troop 1 has not only continued to be provid-
ing a great scouting experience for all of its members, but for the boys
to make long lasting friends and to have fun enjoying the outdoors,

sports, personal advancement and learning to be leaders; the Troop has
always emphasized "boy leadership" and continues to produce quality
leaders for life; and
WHEREAS, The members and scout leaders of BSA Troop 1 look forward to
continuing to support the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, "to
prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their life-
times by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law"; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to add its commendation and
congratulations on this notable occasion, recognizing the proud history,
exemplary efforts and promising future of the Boy Scouts of America;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and BSA
Troop 1 of Flushing, New York, to be observed on February 6, 2010; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to BSA Troop 1 of Flushing, New York.
