LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Cantor Alan and Erica Sokoloff upon the
occasion of their designation for special recognition by the Westchester
Jewish Center on March 6, 2010

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to recognize and pay tribute to
those individuals of firm belief and commitment who have devoted their
purposeful lives to the service of faith and community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Cantor Alan and Erica Sokoloff upon the occasion of their designation
for special recognition by the Westchester Jewish Center at its Dinner
Dance to be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Cantor Alan and Erica Sokoloff have been called upon to
contribute their time and talents to countless endeavors on behalf of
the Westchester Jewish Center and their community and have always given
of themselves unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, In 2000, Cantor Alan and Erica Sokoloff and their two chil-
dren, Arielle and Ranan, moved to Mamaroneck, New York, where they imme-
diately became immersed in the community; and
WHEREAS, Cantor Alan Sokoloff not only leads the Westchester Jewish
Center's davening on Shabbat, Festivals and the High Holy Days, he also
has a small teaching staff and has prepared over 500 students for B'nei
Mitzvah; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Cantor Alan Sokoloff has taught many adults to
read Torah and chant haftarot and megillot, as well as to serve as
Tefillah Leaders of various services, both in Adult Education classes
and one on one; and
WHEREAS, Cantor Alan Sokoloff has also taught a Torah skills class to
the fourth grade at Solomon Schechter in White Plains, New York; now in
his ninth year there, he has taught almost 600 students, including a
large number of Westchester Jewish Center children; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Cantor Alan Sokoloff is also actively engaged in
the broader community; he is a dedicated volunteer with the Larchmont
Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force; twice each month, he can be found unload-
ing pallets of foodstuffs at the CAP Center; since 2007, he has also
been a member of the Hunger Task Force Steering Committee; and
WHEREAS, Cantor Alan Sokoloff is an active member of the Cantors
Assembly and a founding member of Kol Hazzaniim, the Westchester Board
of Cantors; and
WHEREAS, Known by many as the "Candy Man," Cantor Alan Sokoloff has
also shared hundreds of joyous occasions with many of the members of the
Westchester Jewish Center and has been a consoling presence at many
funerals and shiva homes; and
WHEREAS, Erica Sokoloff has been working at Westchester Family Hebrew
Academy since 2001; she began as a Judaic Studies kindergarten teacher
and is now the Director of Jewish Life at the school; she is also
involved in Synagogue events and the Westchester Jewish Center Sister-
hood; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of their community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Cantor Alan and Erica Sokoloff have
stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which Cantor Alan and Erica Sokoloff have
displayed throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-

tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Cantor Alan and Erica Sokoloff upon the occasion of their desig-
nation for special recognition by the Westchester Jewish Center on March
6, 2010; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Cantor Alan and Erica Sokoloff.
